If the song vote was up to me it should be album themed, just that, 3-4 songs to choose from. No stuff that has been released as singles. Different albums every gig, then start again when they were through the albums, but then with 3-4 other songs.

When you see the long list from which the 4 songs get selected,
most of the songs board members are choosing here are not included.
Obviously The Stones put out a list that they realistically feel comfortable
with. Does that mean that so many songs just don’t work out live?
Are to obscure for the rest of the not so hardcore fans attending concerts?

If this thread was a poll, it would be great to include some of the songs
most repeated and let fans chose from the long list the 4 that make the cut.
Then chose again for the song vote winner.

But it will never happen.

This made me laugh out loud!! That song defined my summer of 71. The finest opening chords in rock history!

Summer of '72 I was 17 and my mind was blown seeing it performed live in Norfolk.

Summer of '73 I was an 18 yo U.S. Navy midshipman (we were a Navy family) on a training cruise, on liberty in Barcelona. In a disco a Spanish girl and her friends' alcohol capacity and superhuman nightlife endurance had worn me and a couple of buddies out by 4 or 4:30 AM. (I had to be back on the ship to stand watch at 7.)

But Brown Sugar came on!

I was back on my feet and on the floor with Mercedes again in an instant.

lol love it, but now the idea of staying out all night then having to stand watch (or whatever someone’s version of going to work early in the morning is) makes me shudder

This is very smart.
If one is chosen, we would get rid of the three others leaving space for alternate songs.

I'm shocked they haven't done more cuts from Hackney Diamonds. Keith should be doing Tell Me Straight. Why are they doing Mess It Up? They always do the weak track. Sad, Sad, Sad, or Flip the Switch. There's some lovely songs like Driving Me Too Hard.

Setlist variety

I've been to 12 shows from 1975 to this year, and I kept track of songs they have played. Two things surprised me:

I've heard 91 different songs.

The only songs I've heard at every show are JJF, Sympathy, and Tumbling Dice.

For me they did not play HTW for the jan 73 earthquake show. Otherwise I've heard JJF and TD every time.

2 completely different set list's

Probably a pipe dream of ever happening but with so many songs to choose from it would be cool if the Stones did what Mattelica has been doing, and that's playing 2 nights in each city with 2 completely different setlist's of songs each night.

I would love for the Stones to attempt this but, at this point in their career, I agree that it is more than likely a pipe dream. Kudos to Metallica for giving their fans so many songs over two shows.
IMHO, the band that actually made this part of their performance ethos was the Grateful Dead. I don't think they ever played the same set twice. Their last two shows with Garcia were at Soldier Field in Chicago, except for the Drums/Space segment (which is always different), there were no repeat songs. Then, when they did their Fare Thee Well shows at Soldier Field in 2015, they played three nights with no repeat songs except, again, the space/drums segment.
The closest the Stones came to something like this was on the Licks tour in 2002-2003, which was fantastic. They played about 80 different songs over the course of the tour.

The Licks Tour is the closet they’ve ever gotten to doing something remotely similar; although the differing set-list was based on venue-type, of course. In the earlier stages of the North American leg, it did result in some really great set-lists. I do like your idea, but I sense the Stones don’t have the audience for it; at least not in large enough numbers.

It's stupid easy with them, even if you just did hits, but I don't want to make 2 cause it would make me sad how much of a pipe dream it is.

For what it's worth, while it is a cool concept Metallica is doing, it's more of a gimmick than anything else. They play about 16 songs a night, so it's about 30 songs each city gets between the two venues. They aren't doing THAT much mix up past those 30, and when you boil down to it, they have about 16 recognizable hit songs. Plus it's a tour for a new album, so playing 3 of those each night. That leaves room for about 5 rotating songs each night, which aren't THAT out of a left field.

So in the end, they're doing about what the Stones do on a tour. Comfortable mix of 30 songs, and then maybe a true gem here or there. Again, not knocking the Metallica thing. It's cool, but just saying it sounds better on paper than what the reality actually is for a hardcore fan.

I think it's pretty obvious (and unsurprising, given their age and lives of indulgence) that certain members are not capable of learning/remembering/performing such a variety of songs.

But that's cool, those mofos are nearly a hundred years old and can do as they please!

First show in 1962 i.e. 62 years ago.
Since they did 25 minutes sets in the 60', it has been the same set every night.
Then they changed a bit during the Fruit Of The Loom Tour (LICKS - 2002/2003).

The past few decades they have had monster productions, with graphics.
Most songs have their own graphics. Monkey Man green, Sympathy red etc.
Two set lists would cost more rehearsals, more work for all.
They like it safe, just see Keith's set, safe and great.

So does Metallica: each song has different animations, some have intros played over the PA, some even have pyros. But that didn't stop them from making two different sets every night.
Stones rehearse usually 40+ songs before tour anyway, so it would not cost them more work.

I looked at Metallica sets and they have very, very similar sets. When they play one venue multiple times, they switch around. But if you look at different cities, it is very similar.

Aug 11 and Aug 4
Ecstasy - Ecstasy
Whiplash - Whiplash
Bell Tolls - Bell Tolls
Lightning - Lightning
Sleeps - Sleeps
Lux - Lux
Screaming - Screaming
