You're being weird. If You can't rock me was used for the video montage because of the opening line. If anything that's a reason absolutely not to play it due to the circumstances.

2000 Man .... would be way cool tooooooooooooo

they could update it to 2021 Man and change the lyrics to allude to covid and everyone wearing masks and staying six feet away from each other. Unthinkable back in 1968.

It doesn't matter to me anymore. It used to, but that time has passed now.

I have always thought of Tumbling Dice as the quintessential Rolling Stones song for many reasons. It would make a great final song at thr end of the concert"keep on rolling". They did it once in Philly/ Upper Darby theater. I think of the 73 Brussels version as the best live TD. Never happen but one can dream.

What they should play for an opening song

On a black stage, out step Mick, Keith, and Ronnie under a single spot light.

"Out of Tears," with maybe Mick on piano and Keith and Ronnie on acoustic guitars.

Photo montage of Charlie on the big screens.

Cringe

Jumping Jack Flash will open.

During the intros, mick will say something about Charlie. Maybe. I can see them not saying a word.

Due to the pandemic, Gimme Shelter would be an appropriate opening song.

Of course they will.
Been reported they are planning some sort of memorial at the shows.

I say a video production will open each show, like past tours except this video will highlight Charlie...and possibly fade out with one of his devilish smiles.
After fireworks...possibly another thank you to Charlie which may leave the crowd in tears.

Around and around <> Love is strong <> Rocks off..................and it would be great if they did 'Time waits for no one' at some point........preferably with Mick Taylor......

Open it up with Street Fighting Man, followed immediately by If You Can't Rock Me with the screens showing the same or revised Charlie montage.

After the two songs, Mick says some kind words, welcomes Steve to the band etc.,
Keith says his remarks before he does his set which will lead with Before They Make Me Run, followed by Slipping Away with Charlie's kit illuminated somewhere onstage.

It would be even nicer if they released an official statement prior to the tour.
As of now, only a couple of pics and a video compilation of pics set to If You Can't Rock Me...
Maybe something more in depth like the written piece from Tim Ries...that was a great tribute from him:

How could they honor Charlie on this upcoming tour? That's a question constantly going through my mind. Of course they'll have to change the set list. It will be interesting to see, what they will come up with.

After the intro, I'd imagine something like maybe putting a picture of Charlie on all 4 screens with black background, and Keith walking on stage starting

1. If You Can't Rock Me

then moving into the 2nd and 3rd songs

2. It's Only Rock'n'Roll
3. Tumbling Dice

then, a slow one that would maybe fit

4. Waiting On A Friend

they will probably also want to play their new song pretty early in the set

5. Living In A Ghost Town

no b-stage, I can't imagine the Stones without Charlie walking down there

6. vote song
7. You Can't Always Get What You Want

something emotional could be played in here again. you're just a memory ...

8. Memory Motel

followed by some well known songs

9. Miss You
10. Honky Tonk Woman

now Mick says a few things about Charlie, then introducing the band

11. Slipping Away
12. Little T&A

This section will be interesting, as I don't know if they'd like to play Midnight Rambler without Charlie. They could rahter play another 10min song where many different solos (Mick on harmonica, Karl Denson on Sax, Ronnie on guitar) can try to hide Charlies absense.

13. Can't You Hear Me Knocking

and now they can play the home run

14. Start Me Up
15. Street Fighting Man
16. Paint It Black
17. Sympathy For The Devil
18. Jumping Jack Flash
19. Brown Sugar

off stage

20. Gimme Shelter
21. Satisfaction

21 songs??? Miss You, Satisfaction, Sympathy, Can’t you Hear me Knocking, YCAGWYW all go on forever and you expect them to play 21 songs?

Not going to happen…at their age, 18-19 songs if we’re lucky and done.

Do I think the set list above is way off base? Yes. Apart from the obligatory war horses.

Rod

I hope for two songs during this tour:

- Slave - because of TY reissue and I think Steve Jordan with his feeling would be great here!
- Almost Hear You Sigh - it would be a nice nod to Steve since he cowrote it

Many of the songs I'd love to hear are 4 chord wonders from the 60's...not hard to master...like " Connection" or " She Smiled Sweetly"..or even " 2000 Light Years From Home " which they opened with YEARS AGO! ( maybe not as easy as some others) My question is why rehearse so many songs and end up with basically the same 17 tunes plus the 2 or 3 changes per show.

When did they ever open a show with "2000 Light Years From Home"?

One of the theater shows they did in Europe or part of 40 licks? I’m bad with years. Just a guess but seems to ring a bell. It was of course part of the steel wheels set

I only recall it having been played on Steel Wheels and as a one-off in Glastonbury in 2013.

I'll try to find out, Topi, but I thought I recalled hearing it as an opener!
OK, I was wrong, it was never an opener..( 2000 Light Years From Home). I did the research...yes, they played it during the Steel Wheels Tour, 1989-1990, but mid-set. I must have been dreaming that it was once their opening tune...it's tough getting older! I saw a video of the Stones playing it LIVE and I thought they did a decent job, especially for such a trippy number! I DO wish they'd add a few songs like this for each show...alas, just another dream!
This is a video of " 2000 Light Years From Home" performed in 1989.

I am pretty sure 2000LYFH has only played once after the Urban Jungle tour and that has been Glastonbury.

The only obscure opener on the Licks Tour has been Midnight Rambler in Sidney as far as I remember.

Only played in 1989-90 and Glasto.

Maybe you're thinking of another song, mickschix?

Charlie is gone, Bill is retired, Keith and Sir Michael are closing in on 80 - Does the setlist really matter anymore? Play anything, that is good enough for me now.

We're currently discussing whether a certain song was ever used as an opener in a concert in the past, Stoneage smiling smiley

This old man, he played one,
He played knick-knack on my thumb;
With a knick-knack paddywhack,
Give a dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.
