Interesting post...and some valid points made.
But those opportunities have been lost because they can still pretty much fill stadia and arenas with casual fans, wanting to hear Satisfaction and Start Me UP .
We "harder core" fans might well have been better served had the band not remained so popular...
....But under those circumstances would they still be together ?

No. Because at the time The Colts and Rams were Rivals and the Colts were the much better team. I will provide stats in next post.
If they would just play everything in double time, they could play 38 songs.
Its way more easier to jam and fool around 10 minutes on Satisfaction, Miss You, Brown Sugar, Midnight Rambler, etc than play 5 more songs in the same amount of time.

*Vegas '16 was also only 18 songs due to Mick being sick as you say (first Vegas show flat out cancelled for same reason), and that was right after both Desert Trip shows which had 20 songs each.

Enmore Theatre and Cirkus Krone in 2003 had 18 songs.
Shanghai 2006, 18 songs.
Toronto 2003, 16 songs.
Isle of Wight 2007, 15 songs.
Halifax 2006, 18 songs.

The reason for 18 songs during the Ole Tour was the everlasting shouting from the crowd between the songs and they had a curfew to consider.
Now is this scientifically proven? You're quite confident.
In the past, did you walk out after 19 songs since that's "the best"?

It's too late and quite meaningless to debate whether they should have done this or that earlier in their careers. It's all water under the bridge now. You can't go back in time.

All good points being made. Part of me wishes they would have done some special shows for the serious fans. Then I realize the same people checking off their bucket lists would take up most of the tickets. Wonder if they would complain about the setlist. Then the shoe would be on the other foot, haha. There's no end to it.

Anyone hazard a guess as to why they dropped a song a few stops ago? I think last night was my first show at <20 songs. I'm not expecting 25 anymore, but the past few tours they seem to drop a song along the way and the later in the tour you get them the better chance of only hearing 19 songs.
Let Ronnie sing a song at some point if Mick wants a well deserved rest. I can Feel the Fire would go over great! Its not like giving Billy Preston two of his own songs mid concert!!

they have done 19 song concerts for a few years now, with the odd exception im not sure why they started with 20 this time around. but the days of 26 to 28 songs are well over.

In darts triple 19 is 57 points. That means Mick turned 57 in the year 2000. That was the last year before 911. 911 reversed is 119. Instead of playing 119 songs, they settled on 19. It's just science.

The first two times I saw the Stones at the L.A. Coliseum Oct. 9th and 11th, 1981, the setlists were 26 songs.
Clearly they can't replicate those numbers these days, but 18 or 19 sounds a bit lightweight in comparison.
At this point, 20 is the perfect number, and dwindling down to 19 isn't that big of a deal, though I can't see why they can't just keep it at 20!

As I said earlier: If they shortened the "forever-ongoing-songs" they would make place for 5-6 more songs. They play 19 songs in 130 minutes.
That makes an average of nearly 7 minutes a song (time in between not counted). A good rock and roll song shouldn't be longer than 3 minutes and 30 seconds...

to me the point ist not one song more or one song less. More important is which song/slot they drop. If they drop one of the old warhorses I'm fine with that; in case they drop (like the do now) a surprise/rotation slot I'm frustrated

Me neither, Slewan. I agree with your second statement also. I'm only trying to explain why they are down to 19 songs: If they spend half an hour on 3 songs there won't be much time over for the other songs.
But then we are back to the old setlist arguments again. Like you I would prefer less worn out warhorses...
