Not sure if discussed but Just wanna See his face and Travelin man sound a lot like each other if you listen to that (great) facebook clip.

So did Whitlock play the keyboards on Travelin Man ?I thought it was Nicky Hopkins

I never doubted it was Hopkins, but now listening to it again one could make a case for it being not Hopkins. It is somewhat more straightforward than Hopkins, who often plays faster single note runs, RnR disguised in classical piano. The piano/wurly on Travelling Man is more basic, more laying down a foundation than what we know of Hopkins, who would be more prominent.

Hopkins would often play these fast, Boogie style patterns high up on the keyboard, often sounding a bit like Ian Stewart could sound. That is completely missing from this piano part.

And come to think of it -if you look at the tracks they did on those Olympic sessions of May to July 1970: there's not one Nicky Hopkins track, only Stu and Billy Preston. It seems Hopkins was not available for these sessions.

It appears Hopkins was on tour in the USA with Quicksilver Messenger Service:

Also, Nicky Hopkins gravitated towards acoustic piano for the vast majority of his playing.

1970 sessions, from 4/70 to 11/70, with the pianist:

Jiving Sister Fanny - Stu

Shine A Light - Billy Preston

I'm Going Down - no piano

Hip Shake - no piano

Sweet Virginia - Stu

Good Time Women - Stu

Stop Breaking Down - Stu

Give Me A Hamburger To Go - no piano

All Down The Line (Japan Release?)- no piano

Travelin' Man - Bobby Whitlock

Leather Jacket - no pianist listed, but there is Wurlitzer, Mick T?

Dancing In The Light - Stu

Potted Shrimps - Stephen Stills (possibly played both the keys and lead gtr)

Aladdin's Story - Bobby Whitlock

Who Am I - no piano

Highway Bound (Nov 1970) - no piano

Bent Green Needles (Nov '70) - no piano

Red House (Nov '70) - no piano

Unbelievable peak of the Stones. Would love to hear all those sessions.

I actually think that's Bill Wyman on vibraphone on Aladdin's Story. Jim Price isn't listed in the lineup and I'm guessing Bobby Whitlock on organ. Mick Taylor is listed, so he must be on bass.

Speaking of the tapes sent to France:

• I wonder if Hey Mama from summer of 1970 is actually Walk With Me "Wendy". I'm guessing Stu on piano.

• Also, Trident Jam AKA Prefab really sounds like Clapton, or at least Clapton influenced!

• Dancing In The Light is a weird one. Taylor is listed on the session, so maybe he played the original percussion. I don't hear him on guitar, especially the lead. I suppose he could have laid down the rhythm. I really MUCH prefer the bootleg mix of this tune. Sonic quality aside, the mix is far superior on the bootleg, much more space.

Maybe Hey Mama is Tops or Crazy Mama

You think Tops is that old?

Christopher Hjort references Hey Mama from the studio logs in the summer of 1970. I suppose it could be any song if they changed the name.

I like every song on the original release of Exile On Main Street. They all belong together, exactly in that order, without skipping none. Tumbling Dice exemplifies the typical Stones groove and Let It Loose has a deliciously "loose" elegance in its never ending loop (just as Sweet Virginia) but all the other songs on Exile contribute just as much to that overall feel of it. There's no filler on the album. There are songs on it that even now, after so many years, are still surprising. Like that cool guitarlick in Turd On The Run. Or the way the rhythm guitar and the drums intersect on Stop Breaking Down. Whereas they have made a number of other great albums (BB, LiB, SF, SG, TY), there's a special kind of magic on Exile that no other band in the world could come close to.

Having said that, all the extra bonus tracks they released later (Plundering, River, whatever) just don't add anything. Even subtract from it. It's like you have made a perfect meal of spaghetti boloñesa and then later on, you decide to add some mustard sauce to it.

Agree completely w/ Exile -- I have to play the entire album, the flow of it is implanted in my brain that way (similarly w/ The Who: Quadrophenia) and it's completely perfect!

However I don't play it w/ the bonus tracks, I play that as it's own album so it doesn't subtract anything for me - and I actually like all the bonus tracks (well not "following the river" so much)

I love the original and treat the bonus disk as something unique as well. However, I wish they would add the alternate All Down the Line onto the US pressings because Title 5 is a waste of space—and from what some say—not even of the era.

I actually prefer some of the bootleg mixes however. Dancing in the Light and Aladdin's Story in particular.
