I think the Exile lyrics are some of the finest Jagger has ever written. It's great they are all one big dusty, bluesy mess. Certain styles and turns of phrase should show up maybe once or twice.
There's something vagabond-y and train track-y, hung-over and pining for that love about the whole album.
One revealing tale is when Jagger told about the 'Tumbling Dice' lyrics;where he was talking to an elder black woman (was she cooking for them?) about gambling. And he just let her rip. While he was furiously scribbling down all these priceless phrases.
*I thought the Glimmers were tearing it up weekends in Monte Carlo...

I have been listening to the exile bonus tracks and Pass The Wine is so funky we miss you Bill Wyman. On Following The River - We miss you Nicky Hopkins, Mick said he heard the melody of the jam as he wrote the new lyrics as the original was just a jam.

“Exile on Main Street” is particularly good because it is a collection of well crafted excellent tracks; lyrically and musically. Despite being recorded under the most difficult of circumstances, when it first came out and was played all the way through for the first time– track after track you just knew, just felt that it was going to be fantastic! Special! A double LP is a risky move, but there was so much that needed to be included, all four sides were incredible. So for its time, one could say it was their best, but even today they still come out with albums* that prove they’re still “The Greatest Rock n’ Roll band in the World”.

Aside from the quality of the material....Exile has such a powerful character and atmosphere as an album, which make it much more than the sum of the songs on it

I listened to Exile a few nights ago and what stands out is the wide range of musical styles the band pulled off with aplomb. The run of Tumbling Dice>>>Sweet Virginia>>>Torn and Frayed>>>Sweet Black Angel>>>Loving Cup is just a sheer delight.
While there are couple of also-rans like I Just Wanna See His Face, they don't detract in the slightest from this album's overwhelmingly superb tracks. How they crammed so much goodness into 66m 58s I'll never know.

It`s different from The Stones we know from the 60s. It`s even quite different in character from Sticky Fingers. It contains only one hit. I`d guess it`s an acquired taste. I like it.

It's the best R n R album EVER. Exile is what the Stones is all about, other bands could've come up with Sticky Fingers, Some Girls or Let It Bleed and maybe, just maybe even Beggars, but NOBODY could've come up with Exile 'cept for our boys.

I have 3 favourites - Goats Head Soup, Exile On Main Street, and Bridges to Babylon.
Exile, though, has a sound of its own, and you can listen to it repeatedly and find something new in it. It's a bit like watching the Godfather Trilogy - great, but always something new.
Goats Head is underrated, and is the comedown after Exile. It has a sound of its own, and is an interestingly underrated album.
Bridges to Babylon is their underrated recent album, with some fascinating modern experiments, and a great blues tune, Might As Well Get Juiced.
Also, on the back of these albums, you find some fascinating tours with some great gigs.

They are near to their roots, the Blues, like on Rolling Stones and Rolling Stones 2. And they are influenced by Gospel elements (Tumbling Dice, Shine a Light) in a tasteful manner. Mick Taylor has his first great moments on a studio album (Stop Breaking Down). The song writing is on top, many hidden champions like Sweet Black Angel, I just Want to See His Face.

Sticky Fingers is more polished and concise
Some Girls has the big disco hits so it had more mass appeal
Exile is a raw sprawling epic of Americana. I could never put it on “shuffle”

Whittled down, it can become what might be easier to consider a more commercial album, at least in a recent mindset, that by reducing the amount of songs and focusing on more potential singles (Rocks Off, All Down The Line, Loving Cup and maybe Shine A Light being the best tracks for singles), so that's partially why it's hailed so high due to having one hit single, one memorable single, and nothing else but the usual tour.

It's certainly the odd one out in terms of other big bands (Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin) having a double album because of how scrappy it is - and it doesn't have a big single. Tumbling Dice is certainly well loved but I'm going to guess that's because of MADE IN THE SHADE, REWIND, JUMP BACK and very possibly cemented permanently with FORTY LICKS more than the original sales of EOMS.

I always come back to the murky fidelity, lead vocals that are swamped down to the deep south vibe rooted in country, blues and gospel that is what music was supposed to sound like.
