I think it makes more sense in context ending one of the sides than on a CD with no pause. I don’t own the vinyl so I only know the CD version where it goes right into the next song.
CDs have their good parts and advantages, but the whole sequencing with vinyl; the Side 1 and 2 assignments, that had so much to do with the weight of a song, and it's impact, got lost.
I love "analyzing" how a band sequenced a certain album. Or to investigate why a certain act will often repeat a certain pattern over and over. I have often seen how the Stones do the first two songs, and then the second to last song a certain way.
I support this choice. A song that to me is important in making the album to what it is.
Only difference to the quoted is that I get visions of music that belongs to pagan worship in a Hebrew cultural context. ( For instance, the type of worship that met Moses when, according to religious myth, Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the ten commandments.)

Thanks I did not know that - I read somewhere that Bill Wyman said some songs had different titles and when the album came out he had to remember oh that was that song before the change.
I always dreamed if they opening up with Rip This Joint followed by Turd on The Run - that would be some kind of concert opening two numbers.

I think Let It Loose is appreciated by stones fans but what I think is Nicky Hopkins piano throughout has to be some of the greatest rock piano -

Let it Loose might be known and loved by most every diehard Stones fan in the universe, but as far as radio play and popularity it's sort of an unsung hero as are many tracks on Exile. Not sure how many casual Stones fans, or rock music fans in general, would be able to hear the title "Let it Loose" and all of the sudden think "ooooh yes...masterpiece" like most everyone here would do. Same could be said for many tracks on Exile.
If I said the simple phrase "Turd on the Run" to my wife without any reference to the Rolling Stones, she'd probably look at me like I'm crazy, and say something like: "well you better go chase it down before it escapes".
And I'm not even so sure many of the songs themselves are recognizable amongst the general masses even if they heard them - yes the album sold alot, but not many of the tunes were ever played much on the radio- if ever.

Re "Let It Loose" - I was listening today the clip Dandie gave a link - the backing track without vocals of "Let It Loose". And that alone was a masterpiece... I was going like 'this must be one of the best things the Stones ever done'. What a perfect musical landscape, a painting... and shit, add there Jagger's best vocal delivery probably ever done, and all the rest doing the incredible harmonies and all... The end result is almost too good to comprehend... There is happening so f.....g much and many incredible things...

Yes that was awesome - Keith walking down on the D chord was basic but somehow went to the C note at the 4th fret and b note at 4th and that riff he came up with.

I love that f**ing album. Bill is great on Rocks Off, and they should have gone out of their way to use him more. My favorite was the Virgin Records CD, until I the Blu Ray audio version last year. It's like they're in the front room. Incredible.

now and then it's really good. then sometimes it gets a little better than that.
i think they were really just screwing with us on this one.
you think it's a rock album then it's a country album then it's a blues album

The thing about Soul Survivor when played live I think MJ said it sounded to much like All Down The Line so it was never played live. For the song its great loose graveyard rock bluesy groove along with Dancing With Mr D sounds like the stones are grooving and swagerring their way through a graveyard.

Two songs with inference of shoes - Take the Shine off Your Shoes and Scrap The Shit off your shoes - I wonder if Keith wrote Let It Loose and MJ wrote Sweet Virginia. MJ says LIL was an odd lyric and said Keith wrote it and vice a versa .
Anyway the lyrics on exile are some of the best in rock history. The the other hand Mick said he was running out of lyric ideas and could of repeated himself with the shoe reference twice. Casino Boogie was written with cut out words all scrambled together and pieced into the song.
