Just Wanna See His Face. The way it emerges out from under Ventilator Blues. Jazzy, impromptu, gospel perfection; it sets us up perfectly for Let It Loose. A beautiful segue way and a one-of-a-kind slice of Stones magic.

Definitely Let it Loose. The song is a masterpiece itself and definitely one of the most underrated Stones songs. Never played live (maybe for a good reason, can't imagine Mick getting these scratchy vocal right live).
Sweet Black Angel was the B-Side of Tumbling Dice so it got a bit more attention than let it loose, so I would say that one can't be the most underrated

It's too bad that they did it in the wrong key for this rehearsal take.

thumbs up thumbs up

"Probably didn't want to touch it because of political implications..."

Well during the 2nd Seattle show Jagger said (rather tentatively) "who got free today...? Angela Davis got free today!!". So he was not afraid to express his belief.

Haven't heard of anyone who doesn't like Let It Loose? How can it be underrated, except by the band themselves? smiling smiley

Well I know what you mean, it depends on how you understand underrated. I think that Let It Loose is underrated in a way that the hardcore fans love it, but it isn't as known to the public as it should be. Underrated by the labels to not put it on any compilation and by the band to not play it live. It's a gem that does not get that much attention as it should get, that's why I think it's underrated.
Though I also love Sweet Black Angel, it sound like sitting at a campfire with the Stones around you playing that song. It has that really intimate feeling

Let it Loose by a country mile....both LIL...and I Don't Know Why the Stevie Wonder cover are perhaps 2 of jaggers best vocal tracks ever...seriously.

By that logic it should have been a single, and maybe it should have been?

However, I'm not sure about Let It Loose not being known to the public. It's on their most famous million-selling album.

Totally with you on the campfire-feeling of Sweet Black Angel!

I'll go out on a limb and say that Rocks Off is the most underrated song by the band themselves. It should have been the leading single off the album. A powerhouse of a rocker, but with clever parts and great dynamics. Fantastic vocals.

They play it on one tour, try it a few times in 1975. Then they wait till 1994 to pick it up again. And after that they only play it sporadically. It should have been a staple in the warhorse-section, imo.

I have a hard time writing about Exile.
All my words are trite and I struggle.
It’s my favorite album.
When I heard ‘Sweet Black Angel’ live for the first time it was a moving experience I’d listened to the recorded track literally, that same track,
Xthousands.
To get it 1972 live with the same horns- golden. That single live track is rare.
‘Let It Loose’ that’s what Jagger does on 1 of his best vocals of all time.

The ? underrated song hmmm
‘Just Want To See His Face’ or
‘Soul Survivor’

I think the problem with Rocks Off is that it never worked that well live. They try it now and then but the problem in my opinion is that Rocks Off is a Mick and Keith vocal duo song. Even with two background singers it's just not the same.

Chris Fountain the track talk thread Exile On Main Street

I’m not a good ‘searcher’ of threads on IORR
but when I went thru that one,
it says what I can’t communicate.

It would have been interesting to hear a good mix of that live take, with the guitars down in the mix and vocals and horns up.

It sounds good.

Sweet Black Angel was the first song The IORR Band played together on stage (during the soundcheck), after we met for the first time, btw. We played it in the show as well smiling smiley

Quite different from the original but pretty cool. It reminds me of stuff they did later in the 70's like Luxury, or the live version of Dance Little Sister.

Thnaks for the Post. My definition of underrated means that the song is sometimes overlooked. Let it Loose, deservedly is a favorite. Soul Survivor is also very much respected. Just wanna see his face from previous discussions travels a little more rocky of a road.

The entire album is great!

Tune the guitars to D (standard), and voila, Mick would be able to sing it. And Keith only needs that F# for the intro anyway smiling smiley

I think it rocked in 1972, even though Mick didn't dare to hit the high notes.

Re: Exile on Main Street most undrerrated song

The problem with 'Rocks Off' live is the key. The Stones seem notorious for not liking to switch the key on a song; they do it rarely.
"Rocks Off" is always in my Top 3 alltime Stones tunes. It has everything: rhythm and raunch, beautiful melody; it has the horns; there are hooks galore; a crazy bridge in odd timing; some of the best lyrics; Keith yammering along in his great high voice; a Jagger tour de force.
On live stage like "Love is Strong", or the chorus for "Anybody Seen my Baby" - Jagger can't project because he is using his low range in studio, and live it doesn't cut through. So we always hear him attempting some kind of higher harmony; which in turn completely ruins that great melody.
On the studio version he is harmonizing with himself - the high line doesn't work on it;'s own, it needs the bottom part to pull it together.

Underrated for Exile? IMO not "Let it Loose" because everyone agrees that it is a masterpiece. "Id say either "Casino Boogie", which is almost Dadaistic in it's monotone, and that incredible Sax solo; or "Soul Survivor" - I don't think they could have picked a better song to end 'Exile'. One of the best moments of the album is that last rave-up that Nicky announces with the solo piano break, and then everyone joins in one last time.

PS - There is something about a double album closer; "Sick Again" on LZ's double is similar to "Soul Survivor"; or "It", which closes out "Lamb Lies Down on B'way". There are other ways to do it of course; see Dylan or the Beatles e.g.

Don’t think I’ve ever heard that live version, it’s ambitious. Could have also been played acoustically in the asweet Virginia slot.

Most underrated?: Turd On The Run for me

Back in the day and for many years, I would actually pick up the needle and skip Just Want to See His Face. It was so weird and didn't seem like a song. But now I get it and it feels like an integral part of the LP. Still my vote for under-rated or under-appreciated gem goes to Turd on the Run. It's certainly one of the funniest Stones song titles ever.

Rocks off. I agree. It is the most underrated rocker, song onExile, album opener.

I Just Want To See His Face could very well be way underrated. I agree with Ross, it's just the perfect link between Ventilator Blues and Let It Loose.
