I trust your word Turner - I suppose coming from the 'horses mouth'(Paul) would be the most accurate. thumbs up

*I originally cited Schottons book as 1988, but the correct original publishing is 1983.
I also discovered the book was co-written with Nicholas Schaffner who had also written the critically acclaimed 'Beatles Forever', 1977

Get rid of all the fillers/supbar stuff on both EOMS and the White Album and burn the remaining songs on CDR - a 80min blank disc will provide space enough, maybe a 74min would also do. So you´ll have a great sampler of the Beatles and the Stones containing some of their greatest songs.

And please dont ever touch Wish You Were Here, one of the greatest albums of all time and Pink Floyd´s best.

The only way to listen to WISH YOU WERE HERE is by listening to Shine On You Crazy Diamond and the title track. The rest of it is, just like THE FINAL CUT, a snoooooozzzzzze.

We've also been discussing the White Album and Wish You Were Here, but you've got a point with those too... ;-)

Tumbling Dice, Casino Boogie, Ventilator Blues, Stop Breaking Down, Soul Survivor, Loving Cup....straight up R'n'R?

Sorry, I don't see the relation.

Well, to my ears they sound more rock than say country; thus no Sweet Virginia. I guess I'm just imagining a "rockier" album than if such songs were included. Depends how you define rock. for me it's all about that certain backbeat.

This one I think is much harder, and possibly impossible to do. I see both sides of the coin. To me, the single album is easily:

Side A:
Rocks Off
Rip This Joint
Tumbling Dice
Sweet Virginia
Torn And Frayed

Side B
Happy
Loving Cup
Ventilator Blues
All Down The Line
Shine A Light
Soul Survivor

Hard to keep Let It Loose off of there, so I could understand that being subbed in for Ventilator Blues or Soul Survivor. Dealer's choice.

To me, those are hands down the "real" songs on the record. Stuff like Sweet Black Angel, I Just Want To See His Face, Shake Your Hips is, for lack of a better word, filler. I like the songs and don't consider them filler, but I can see how they would be and admittedly when I stack them up against the heavy hitters they pale in comparison. But Exile's charm is that its all there.

I think its harder to pin Exile down to a single record. As I showed, I could personally do it, but can't say I wouldn't lose great stuff in the process like Stop Breaking Down, etc.

Why would you want to make it a single album? Put differently, I think you'll have as many disagreements as to what stays and what goes as you would when you're packing up the car if the house were on fire:

"We're taking Casino Boogie with us"

"Not if that means leaving Sweet Virginia we're not."

"Torn and Frayed comes, too."

"And don't even think about touching Shine a Light!"

Are you kidding? Not gonna have that argument.

I know this can be a divisive topic, but as much as I love ALL of EXILE, I always thought critics might have treated it kinder as a single disc.

The album works perfect, you can't take one off it.

Agreed. In my view Exile is a perfect record and partly because of the way it is sequenced. Who could break up side two?

I could never see exile as a single album.to many strong songs, and I wouldn't change or remove any of them. The four sides of exile are so well put together, and each side has its own flavour. It will always be in my top 3 albums

Don't ever see a reason to cut an album of 18 good songs down to 10 good songs.

This is just for fun. I love the whole thing but it got bad reviews when it came out as being a sprawling mess with too much filler. I disagree but I just wonder how it would've been reviewed if it came out in a shorter version. Just makin' chit-chit, not trying to trash the bible or anything...

No problem, you have your fun HTFlash. But I couldn't part with one note of that album and I'm very glad I don't have to. smileys with beer

These are good picks and a nice running order. But I would make Side B side A. I can't imagine "I Just Want To See His Face" leading off an album.

Well I did like Exile very much. It was like four single-sided albums - hopefully something for everyone. It wasn't really meant to be played all at once.

This is like taking einstein's "e=mc^2" and saying you just like the "e" part. It's the whole thing that makes it genius, cut it in half and it's just another album, or letter in the alphabet....
