If the Stones make another record, how will it sell
Posted by: keefriffhards ()

Any ideas. I can see it topping the charts for a few weeks but ultimately i just cant see it staying there for too long.. It would have to be outstandingly good.
That would take Mick and Keith working very closely and combining their strengths for one last Hurrah.

You're more optimistic than I...In a world/consumerism world, somehow Ariana Donut-Licker, Katy Perry, or the next flash in the pan will keep it from reaching number one. Maybe the top 10, dare I say Top 5, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

It will sell well if it is titled "Taylor Swift Presents England's Newest Hitmakers, The Rolling Stones". Of course, there will have to be a duet on the album with Lady Gaga (maybe not, her time in the sun has faded) and another with Adam Levine. Maroon 5 will back up Keith on his obligatory song or two with Charlie sitting in as the second drummer. Like on "Abbey Road" by the Beatles with "Her Majesty", there will be a short moment of silence at the end of the record followed by Mick and Keithg leaning into the microphone and crooning together their cover of Bob Seger singing "Today's music ain't got no soul, just give me more of that old time rock'n'roll". Then, the Stones will hasten into the recording studio, record in a matter of days a back to the basics album that kicks a*s like no one believes and have it in the stores, on the radio airwaves, streaming services, whatever, within a month, with folks everywhere buying it and screaming, "This is real fluckin' music, man. These guys are real fluckin' rock'n'roll!!!!" And, thus, the world's greatest rock'n'roll band will hit the road again for another series of tours showing us all how real it can be.

About the same as the Sticky Fingers reissue, top 5 during the first week and a chart run like this 4-30-60-80-110-140-170-199 or something like that, nowadays digital and streaming are included on the albums chart so no chance to last more than 8-10 weeks without a hit single.

How will it sell?

Out the back-door of the usual places... brothels...2-star rated rest-rooms...and turpentine camps ...

They should sell it like a bootleg, would add special mystique. Ha-ha.

A new record after 10 years would of course be a chart-topper, no matter how good or bad the album would be. Instant No1 for at least a few weeks. Even without Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus on it.smiling smiley

I'm pretty sure it would stay in the Top 10 for at least a month. Especially in many Western European countries as well as the US, there is a huge market of Stones fans, within their generation and younger, who would buy "the new Stones" Album. That doesn't necessarily mean, that it will become a Johnny Cash-like piece of late art that will stand out to their earlier work in an artistic sense, but in a short-term commercial sense it would attract lots of attention and sell respectively.
This will especially hold true, if their switch on their marketing tools at their proposals, both offline and online

If it sounds anything close to how their sounding on the zip code tour (or like Keith on new 'Trouble' single), then maybe the fans that went to the shows around the world will buy it.

I'm pretty shure a new stones album will be marketed like the last U2 album through modern download/online channels for free and a couple of weeks later will be offered for sale. The Stones will get a flat fee which will be larger than any money they did with any album so far. They don't need to sell albums the old way.

It wouldn't sell like Some Girls, but the (merged) thread on IORR would be the most viewed and posted thread in several years.

After that long break between two albums it could easily become their greatest commercial sucess of all times. Media hype and heavy omnipresent promotion would make it a mega-seller. Even Queen Elizabeth would be forced to react.

Does it always go this quite on here after a tour.
18 sept can't come quick enough sad smiley

Any one else have a sneaky feeling the glimmer twins just might enter a studio and record, some time soon. Its time i think. Everything is about timing.
How long does it take the stones to record an album these days. Any guesses..
If they started recording before Christmas and continued in the new year would it be possible to finish an album then maybe take it on the road next spring ??

I think you all people are living in another world, I said it before: nowadays DIGITAL songs (10 downloads = 1 album sale) and STREAMING (1000 streams = 1 sale) are included on the albums chart, without a hit single it won't last more than a month in the Top 100 since about 50% of the album sales are now points from Tracks and Streams.

We can look at the chart run of Sticky Fingers during the first 4 weeks:
UK: 7-22-46-76
US: 5-31-66-111

And we are talking of an album with Brown Sugar and Wild Horses, 2 songs with good points from downloads and streams.

The music industry changed a lot during the last 4 or 5 years and in 2-3 years no one will buy full albums anymore.

Will the Stones not use and include points from downloads and streams also ?

If it's the same core Stones, it'll debut close to the top since it doesn't take much anymore to do that, then tumble down the charts. Might get 2 or 3 hundred thousand in the US, don't know about elsewhere. They can't hype it anymore than they've tried for any other release the past twenty years, Taylor would add a few more sales but you won't see a new Stones release sell appreciably better than anything since Steel Wheels. They're just not seen as a current band anymore, and they don't have reunions(other than MT and BW) to fall back on to make it seem like a big deal to casual fans.

Yes, but TEA Points (Tracks) and SEA Points (Streams) are young and not very much rock oriented formats, current artists benefit from this change in methodology, and for old acts is all about their greatest hits, just look at this week's US chart and all the greatest hits or old albums with popular songs included:

Just look at Neil Young for example, by next week his Greatest Hits album will be outselling his last studio album.

If the Stones make another record...

Hmmm... I expect something similar to ABB 's application. Speaking about the Global Chart, ABB was #1 during two weeks and, if I remember correctly, spent 5 weeks on Top-10 of the particular Chart.

Speaking about units sold, honestly, I have not idea! Album sales have been reduced dramatically. Who knows, in 2016 perhaps one million copies sold, worldwide, is number that "gives" an entire week on #1 of the Global Chart...

I imagine if it is good it will sell well and it it sucks it won't. I know the Stones have a base of fans that will buy anything they put out, that probably includes most of us here but it's a fair assumption that sales will reflect the quality of the music.....although looking at the numbers above I'm not so sure even that's the case anymore.

In 2015, only 1 album has sold more than a million copies worldwide: Taylor Swift's 1989 (and that one is from last year)
Only 10 or 15 albums are over 500,000 copies worldwide this year, Sticky Fingers is close to 200k and will end up with about 275-300k this year.
