Give the drummer some ...

I have a question about Charlie's style of drumming. Specifically, I'm talking about the way he does NOT play the 2 and 4 beat on the high hats, but raises his stick high off the high hat.
To the best of my knowledge, Charlie is the only drummer I know of that plays this way. I don't think Charlie started out playing this way.
Does anybody know when Charlie started playing this way and if he has ever commented on it in print?
My guitar player suspects he does this to have a cleaner back beat and I don't disagree but would like to find what Charlie says about it.
Thanks,
Marv
