My favorite band after The Rolling Stones is Dream Theater.
Great contrast from all the The Stones music I consume since they change every song in their setlist for each new tour, and they're all brilliant at their instruments.

Bowie was always my 2nd favorite after the Stones for many years. More recently I like the Allman Brothers.

However, I really do like a lot of different artists. Going to the Nashville show and visiting the Mississippi Delta recently had me listen to a lot of Blues and also plenty of Country music. And since we also hit Memphis & Graceland there was plenty of Elvis along the way.

I've always had a tough time declaring 1 band as my single favorite, or ranking them. After they called it quits, I conceded that R.E.M. is probably my all time favorite band. The Stones are on the list of favorites for sure, as are The Beatles and U2.

I tend to be more into bands that are currently making music (that I like - e.g. U2's latest is pretty weak). I don't listen to R.E.M. as much as I used to. My favorite bands who are making music at the moment are, in no particular order:

Apart from the usual suspects (50's and 60's bands/artists, as well as jazz, blues and soul artists), Pappo's Blues, a blues/rock band from Argentina is one of my favorites. Their first album from 1971 is awesome.

I'm guessing the Band of Gypsy's stuff was a bit much for you? I can't imagine you don't like some of his later posthumous stuff like Angel and Drifting though. I've just never seen anybody cut their Hendix appreciation off at 1970.
