OT: Movies scenes that break your heart

Ill start with this one: Midnight Cowboy - that woman running around, the old man sitting on a bench alone...and the expression on Jon Voight's face, and in his eyes. I saw this last week on TV for the first time in years, and it never loses its visceral edge.
You can just feel the loneliness and sadness of desperate people.
And can anyone top this music? Haunting.
Go..

Don't get me started with Sophie's Choice....went with a friend, and had no idea what the movie was about. We walked out of the theater and straight into the nearest bar.

Good Will Hunting when Robin Williams gets Matt Damon's character to break down. WOW! No wonder Damon and Aflick won an academy award for writing the screen play. Brilliant movie.

As Good as it Gets when Jack finally lets his neighbor into his heart and invites him to live with him.

Corny I know, but Batman Dark Night Rising when Batman escapes from the pit and the music starts and he starts running toward his destiny.

Lawrence of Arabia when Lawrence survives the Sinai with the one boy and they go into the officer's club and orders lemonade for the boy and the bartender calls him a bloody wog and Lawrence freaks out saying they took Akaba. Brilliant!

Million Dollar Baby when Clint kills Swank in the hospital room. Brutal.

A lot more. I love film and am easily emotional over great films.

Bambi - no explanation needed

Charlotte's Web -- when Charlotte dies and leaves her egg sack to Wilber's care

Charlotte's Web -- when all of Charlotte's babies fly away

Old Yeller - yes indeed

I've got to stop for now: I'm tearing up

Midnight Cowboy - at the end when Ratso dies on the bus to Miami.

The Godfather - when Vito Corleone dies of a heart attack in front of his grandson in the garden.

Brian's Song - sad ending.

End of Midnight Cowboy - on the bus when Jon Voight holds Ratso protectively. And again, that damn music.
Shampoo: end when Warren Beatty is begging Julie Christie not to leave him..he's on his knees, 'I don't trust anybody else...' and she leaves him just standing there alone. And then they play Wouldn't it be Nice.

I will never forget the first time I saw To Kill a Mockingbird - I was a kid and so I still believed that the good guy always triumphs, even in the movies. That scene where Tom Robinson gets convicted just slayed me. I couldn't believe it and cried through most of the rest of the movie.

The scene in Lonesome Dove when Gus dies...when Aurora is screaming for pain medicine for her daughter in Terms of Endearments...when Mac Sledge in Tender Merices (again Robert Duvall) is talking to his wife after his daughter died in a car crash, when he says:

"I don't know why I wandered out to this part of Texas drunk, and you took me in and pitied me and helped me to straighten out, marry me. Why? Why did that happen? Is there a reason that happened? And Sonny's Daddy died in the war, my daughter killed in an automobile accident. Why? See, I don't trust happiness. I never did; I never will."

Sniff, sniff...sob, sob...okay, I'm done.

Anyone remember Sounder? The scene where the young boy visits his dad in jail, incarcerated for stealing a ham to feed his family. He brings a cake that his mother had made, and the jailer pokes through it, pretty much destroying it, looking for a concealed weapon. That begins the scene where the dad and son affirm their love for each other. I wept like a baby!!

One of the final scenes, where the dad (Paul Winfield) is released and is running to his loving wife (Cicely Tyson) who is running to him, pretty much destroyed me.

5) the ending of Titanic.
4) the gathering of donors in George Bailey's house in It's a Wonderful Life.
3) Dorothy saying goodbye before going back to Kansas.
2) The death of Edgar Halcyon in Tales of the City. (technically, a tv mini-series).
1) The death of Ratso Rizzo.

hm: when Glinda and Elphaba sing goodbye in Wicked the musical. Would probably be #1 if it was an actual movie.

I do not know what is says about me but the only scene I recall really breaking my heart was the (well... one of them) ending of Lord of the rings when Frudo have to sail with the last ship carrying Elvs from middle earth. I was motionless when Boromir died or when the King of Rohan did but really had a tear in my eye when the ship left smiling smiley
