What was the significance of the title "Flowers"? Was it a nod to flower power hippy stuff? The music doesn't seem to support that premise, curious what people thought who actually were around when the record was released and can put both the music and title in the context of the times.

Flowers is one of my absolute favorites. While I love Mick's voice at is rawest, growling and raspy, it is so magical to hear him singing so softly and melodically, especially in songs such as "Out Of Time". And of course I'll always have memories of my boyfriend and I driving home with "Lets Spend The Night Together" playing in the car

I didn't really think about - it fit in with the times, and so did the music.
The cover art makes the title at least a little sarcastic, but that didn't occur to me at the time.
(Speaking of the cover art, someone should mention Brian's stem having no leaves,
which apparently Mick, Keith and Andrew considered a hilarious joke.)

I can't agree with your view of the music not fitting the hippie scene -
several of the tracks are psychedelic-flavoured, and/or have a folk/Elizabethan feel that was quite on trend,
and there are lyrics about free love, drugs, rejecting middle-class values - the works!

And you can dance to it :E

bought flowers when i was converting all my stones records and tapes to dvd.

to be honest not sure if i needed to buy it as im sure i can get everything on it elsewhere, but its a good collection of songs from the stones of that time. not really sure though about the importance of the track listing.

The reason I bought FLOWERS was primarily due to "Ride On Baby", the only song I didn't own at the time. But that was early 80's, long after the heyday of the album...

Like I have said earlier, years ago I guess, the reputation and legacy of album would had been much better if they had just waited a month or two to get the next single out and having included it there instead of re-releasing "Ruby Tuesday" and "Let's Spend The Night Together" again in album. I mean, if we have had "We Love You" and "Dandelion" instead of those two, FLOWERS could have been more like a normal album like DECEMBER'S CHILDREN, and not just a 'collection', completing nicely US album catalogue between BETWEEN THE BUTTONS and THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES with no over-lapping.

Unfortunately timing was not on their side. Mick and Keith were too busy with the authorities to get a new single out in time. And Oldham (and Decca/London) had no time to wait but wanted his share of the cake (Summer of Love).

Just to conclude - - it's still a nice remnant of the mid-1967 pop/rock music era.

You can pop in the vinyl album, your tape cassette version, cd or digital download and still get the groove of that era with 'Flowers.' In a way probably better than TSMR (though do not want to go there for that debate).

Lou Adler "Monterey promoter" and Tom Wilkes "Monterey Art director", both contributed the album "Flowers" just a few weeks after the release of Sergeant Pepper album at the time! I was into most of them songs from other albums and got myself a copy of Flowers later when I travelled The Rockies for 7,99 Canadian dollars. The albumcover looks hippy to me...
