JJF, SFM, sympathy

BB and LIB were great albums for setting a mood, creating tension, and then paying it off.

this is always interesting, to see what intros of Stones songs people like..

the truth is there are so many..

so many Stones songs with great intros.

I mean its almost like, which Stones song doesn't have a great intro.

I agree with duke: too many to mention.
But I am gonna mention JJF anyway, because it never ceases to fire me up, in just a few seconds, however tired I am, or drunk, or overworked, or in a bad mood, just those first few bars are enough to inmediately heat up the blood and make all my adrenaline neurons (or whatever) fire.
The best is when it happens unexpected, you're in a bar with a couple of friends, there is noise everywhere: chatter, glasses, moving chairs, and suddenly your almost feel it before you hear it: the JJF intro.

I like the later ones like She's So Cold and Start Me Up.

So many great ones on the records but only a few that have the same impact live. The ones with straight ahead Keith riffs that don't really "build" are the only ones that seem to work live, like JJF, BS and SMU.

Some of the ones that are truly sublime on the records but don't translate that well in concert are:

1. YCAGWYW - when the choir fades and that acoustic guitar takes over. Mmmmm!

2. CYHMK - Perfect on the record but never has the impact when played live. The best song intro of them all, imo.

3. Gimme Shelter - The tremelo, the subtleties of the licks and build are all lost when they play this one.

4. Some Girls - Without Sugar Blue's harmonica blasting the synapses on the intro it is not even close to the same impact

peace

I wouldn't say the best, but I like the drum intro on Route 66.

My vote: Honky Tonk Women. Cowbell -> Drums -> Riff -> Lick -> Vocals. Perfect

JJF, BS, GS & Satisfaction are all great but they all "need more cowbell". spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Peace,

Opening bass line of Live with me is worth an honorable mention.

Midnight Rambler - with sssoul nailed the description to this incredible intro.

'Like something evil dropping downwards into the pits of hell'. Or something like that. Check it out, it's pretty eerie.

Satisfaction. It was THE wake up call for anything and everything in 1965. The music surprised me as well as that it was time...time for something new. With that they were the first true rebels imo.

I also like intros with vocals that aren't actual lyrics, such as Let's Spend the Night Together, Hang Fire and Tumbling Dice.

As for instrument intros, Waiting on a Friend is classic, Sway, Paint it Black and Undercover are bad ass.

And although it's a cover, I love the intro to Just My Imagination, because it tells you from the start it's a Stones reinvention, not a straight cover

Great thread.

Never thought about their whole body of work through this lens. They're pretty focking great at openings/intros. My sense is Keith is particularly strong in this regard.

They excel in many aspects but Keith, he is the king of the intro.. The greatest in the history of pop music. So many to choose from.. Almost every song. HTW, SV, BS, WH, CYHMK... for fun I choose Monkey Man... Very insightful thread.
