Think
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, December 3 - 8, 1965

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - acoustic guitar, electric guitar

I'm givin' you a piece of my mind, there’s no charge of any kind
Try a very simple test, you should just retrace your steps
And think back, back, a little bit baby, back, back, alright
Think, think, think back baby
Think, think back a bit girl
Think, think, think back baby
Tell me who's fault was that, babe, tell me who's fault was that, babe

Think about a year ago, how we lived I'll never know
Connin' people for a dime, here's another piece of my mind
And think back, back a little bit baby, back, back, alright
Think, think, think back baby
Think, think back a bit girl
Think, think, think back baby
Tell me who's fault was that, babe, tell me who's fault was that, babe

Take a look inside yourself, you're not really someone else
Still, I am the same old me, you say I lack maturity
But think back, back a little bit baby, back, back, alright

We're not children anymore, we don't need to play with toys
Take a look and you will find, you're gettin' old before your time
But think back, back a little bit baby, back, back alright
Think, think, think back baby
Think, think, I said back a bit girl
Think, think, think back baby
Tell me who's fault was that, babe, tell me who's fault was that, babe

I said think, you'd better think back a little bit
I said think, what about last year and the year before?
I said think, you promised me so much
I said think, doncha 'member what you said?

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Aftermath” LP
(Decca SKL 4786) UK, April 15, 1966

A favorite of mine, that shows maturity at that age, despite the "girl" saying he lacks maturity. One of the many Stones songs where they get it and sing about things many, if not all, of us go through. This whole album was amazing like that with great, early Jagger / Richard writing.

One of the quirky numbers that make Aftermath such a quirky album
It was probably meant to be a pop tune, but instead it's ... the Rolling Stones

Always loved this track with its quirky rhythm and melody. It's almost like it can't decide between being a folk rock or a r'n'b tune.

Lyrically it's another Jagger girlfriend put down - probably about Chrissie Shrimpton - which adds further fuel to Aftermath being the Stones' most misogynistic album.

Was it just a coincidence that The Beatles had a track out a few months before called Think For Yourself?

Mick (co-) wrote two songs with the title "Think".
I must admit I love them both. I love the Aretha Franklin song with the same title as well.

The song at hand surely sounds like it contains more instruments than the ones listed
in the original post. I feel pretty sure there is a mellotron present.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Has been claimed as the first time Fuzz-Tone was used on a recording. Though there is some debate from other circles.

I'm a bit tired today, but what was the other one again?

Maybe they meant Think from Wondering Spirit? Although Mick didn't write that one.

Oddly enough The Beatles Think For Yourself featured fuzz bass and was recorded a few months earlier.

This track by Marty Robbins, from 1961, beat them both though.

That's Bill Withers, right?

I like the intro and the verse.
The chours is a huge letdown and the reason why it is not among my favourites.
It simply doesn't fullfill what the start promises.

I always prefered Taj's version. More funky.

Yes, I agree, always some similarities until the Beggar's Banquet album. 'I am waiting' is another, at least in terms of song title similar to Beatles 'Wait.'

'Think' is OK, nothing cool or great imo. Also I hate that line "Tell me who's fault is that, babe?" Just sounds awkward...

There is another Stones version of this song which was included on the aborted "Necrophilia" release.

This is another one of Mick's anti-woman songs.

I'm sure it was great in 1966, but it doesn't really stand the test of time does it?

peace

It really wasn't great in 1966 either, nor was Going Home.

There wasn't mellotron on any stones releases until We Love You. smiling smiley

One of my fave cutz off Aftermath along with It's Not Easy, Dontcha Bother Me and Flight 505. It was always a groove and will always be along with the others noted. Think how dated MLH and SG sound today. I must admit, though, there is a still a soft spot in my heart for Lady Jane and I Am Waiting. Classic classic songs.

It's very 'Brit-Pop' 1966...and very good Brit-Pop btw...in N.Y.a band were gathering for some real rock n roll that year...spelled Velvet Underground...

Well say hallelujah - good to see your typeface. Don't be a stranger!

Think's all right in its quirky way.
"There’s no charge of any kind" is funny
and I bet the Glimmers wrote the lyrics together.

Does Keith use the same fuzz pedal as on Satisfaction? It sounds like it, imo.

Brian on fuzz guitar, according to the NME review, April 8, 1966.

Stu said that Keith went through a number of Maestro FZ-1 fuzztones on tour, stamping them hard so it might or might not be THE one. By the time of Think the Maestro Fuzztone had changed from a 3 transistor circuit to a 2 transistor circuit (FZ-1A) so it might have been the latest model.
