Fantastic result as in SFTD gets to be second encore? They did that at my very first show and when I listen to the boot now,
those horns annoy the crap outta me. It just can't get more vegas than that. Did they do it in Stockholm as well?

No!, it must be one of the best versions I've ever heard, very little Vegas over this:

approx 7 minutes of Vegas and 40 seconds of glory!!!

Gimme Shelter
Tumbling Dice
Miss You

Honestly, it's a tough task to pick 3 from that list. As much as people bitch about the war horses (and I get it), it's sort of what I want from The Stones. I'm not that way about every band, in fact, most of the bands that I have seen 5 or 15 or however many times they tour it's all about the fact that I do expect the set list to be different, otherwise it's not interesting. What these artists have in common (R.E.M., sadly no more, Drive-By Truckers, Robyn Hitchcock, to name a few) is an audience who largely expects that. With The Stones, they are at such a critical mass that the majority of fans in the audience are some degree of casual (and, you know what? that's OK), so you're not going to get that crucial energy feedback loop if they don't pepper the set with war horses. Certainly not in a stadium.

What I do wish The Stones would do is maybe just extend their set from 19 to 22 or 23 songs. Heck, even 21. Just extend it enough that somewhere between 2 to 4 tasty surprises can be thrown in. It would appear they're giving a good 2 hour 15 minute show every night, and, at their ages, I can't ask for more than that, so, if they have to, take out Midnight Rambler to get the extra songs in.

Another solution: they could book an arena tour and advertise the heck out of it with tons of clear notice along the lines of "This one's for the hard cores. We are NOT PLAYING HITS." Put 1/2 of the tickets up for sale at a more down to earth price (maybe $100 - still plenty of coin), then the other 1/2 as "their own scalper" so to speak. This would give some hard cores a chance at great seats for a decent price but also deter scalpers (a - enough pre tour advertising/warning will dilute demand for people who don't want to go if they aren't getting Satisfaction, b - 1/2 the tickets would be at scalper level prices anyway, but with money going to promoters/band). And it would give hard core fans (of which there must be enough to fill arenas in major markets anyway) a chance to see the show they want. If a casual fan says "Know what? I'm down!" fine. If a casual fan ignores the pre-tour advertising/warning, well, maybe they are a little pissed but get an education.

I guess this is a whacked out idea and reflects why I'm not a promoter. I suspect the band doesn't have the will to do it. They want to please the masses and get paid. I don't really have a problem with it. For this tour, we're taking our daughters, and we are pretty dang excited as a family. We'd be disappointed if they didn't play a war horse heavy set. Er, sorry for rambling. But someone with connections, get working on that "No Hits" tour.

IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII IIII Brown Sugar
IIIII IIIII IIIII IIIII I Gimme Shelter
IIIII IIIII IIIII IIII Tumbling Dice
IIIII IIIII IIII You Can't Alway Get What You Want
IIIII III Start Me Up

IIIII I Miss You
IIIII I Satisfaction
IIIII Sympathy For The Devil
II It's Only Rock'n'Roll

7 posters are fine without any warhorses.

Midnight Rambler, Paint It Black and Street Fighting Man were suggested for an upgrade to warhorse status. Opinions?

btw, we'd need WAY MORE participation in this thread or it ain't representative. I actually thought that one would become the most interesting.

MR is
I don't think PIB or SFM are, at least not on the last couple tours

MR is of course a vital part of their show these days, which it wasn't 05-07. But I wouldn't call it a warhorse because it's too rich in nuances and they can't belt it out high on adrenaline without caring too much.

JJF unexpected... I agree, seeing how bad they've played it for years! Hearing the STICKY FINGERS live version of JJF reinforces the fact that they haven't played it with any swagger for eons.

Jumpin' Jack Flash

Their three best songs

No way. Brown Sugar is their most definitive and is one of their 3 best songs.

SFM is certainly a warhorse. Paint It Black not so much. Midnight Rambler, no way.

indeed!

Yep, those are the ones.

It was a Stone (Keith?) who first used the term warhorse to refer to the iconic hits
that they can trust even in the face of hard circumstances like seated fields, nacho eating, cold rain, etc,
to bring the crowd to their feet dancing & cheering, singing & rending their garments,
pouring out their love of the Rolling Stones any old which way. That's what a warhorse is.
A valiant tried-and-true charger.

I love the Rolling Stones

Yes, it was Keith who started to use the term.

To me, Tumbling Dice always sounds good live.

Brown Sugar and JJF are the only two warhorses I really want to hear when the tour stops in Buffalo.

I have yet to hear a live version of Satisfaction, from the earliest versions if in the 60s on, that does the original justice.

Gimme Shelter Sympathy For The Devil-
3rd might be Brown Sugar but then JJF.

Obviosuly No Security had no satisfaction nor miss you and I think a third major player was missing?

Okay Nikkei, you're making me feel guilty, so I'll par-ti-ci-pate. I'm practicing my southern accent before Nashville. grinning smiley

So...first of all, yes I think MR should be upgraded to warhorse status. When was the last time that they didn't play it?

My picks are:

Satisfaction
JJF
MR

But, but...I have to hear Miss You, and it wouldn't be the same without BS, and then there's Gimme Shelter. OH!! Can't forget HTW either...and then, and then...

I really can't do this, sorry Nikkei. sad smiley

I also think everything on Beggars, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile and Some Girls should be immediately upgraded to warhorse status.
