“Streets Of Love” grows on me. Very nice ballad, but I think is NOT the better ballad of the Stones since 1989

In my opinion:

#1 by far “Blinded By Rainbows”

#2 “Street Of Love” and “Already Over Me” are fighting (I cannot decide yet! )

#4 “Out of Tears”

# 5 “Blinded By Love”

# 6 “Almost Hear You Sigh”

(I don’t mention Keith’s ballads)

smile: i can almost hear me sigh too. okay so by "Keith's ballads" you mean "ballads that Keith sings lead on on the official releases", but for the sake of the historical record: Almost Hear You Sigh (aka "cousin of Beast of Burden") originated with Keith and Steve Jordan.

IMHO I prefer the Keef ballads. Somehow his soul emotions seem to get onto the record.

Maybe it's a little bit early to rate SOL untill we listen to the full CD version. But I like it very much and it grows on me.

I think that ballads don't suit the Stones well. This doesn't mean that their slow stuff is bad. There are so many stunning slow songs in their cathalogue. But most of them are sort of "easy listening" in between rock numbers. Good to listen to while relaxing and drinking a good beer. They are great but they don't move me. Angie is the quintessential Stones slow number: beautiful guitar work, romantic melody, but you can't take it too seriously! I think that the Stones mood and attitude is way to positive to come up with a truly heart breaker ballad.

There are of course some exceptions. Mile (that last verse cuts you in two) and (in part) horses from SF, possibly Time from IORR, Warried from TY. "Recently" the only truly heartfelt slow numbers are Keith's from DW (Sleep Tonight, followed by the boogie by Ian, probably the most touching moment on a Stones album) and Stripped (the "naked" Slipping Away).

Oh no, Always Suffering is a great song. I thought I was the only one who liked it.

Jagger/Richars are really underrated as ballad song writers. Of course you have the classics: As Tears Go By, Wild Horses, Angie. But what about all the hidden diamonds average joe not yet has discovered: Let it Loose, Salt of the earth, Shine a Light, I got the Blues, Coming Down Again, Winter, Memory Motel, Time Waits For No One, Fool To Cry, Beast of Burden, Heaven, Play With Fire.... They CAN write ballads, and IMHO they still write beautiful ballads. I don't think they ever can write a song like Satisfaction or Brown Sugar again, but I think Out of Tears is just as great as Angie.

Angie was released in 1973, which was before 1989. Well in my conventional time-frame it is. Perhaps if you travel faster than the speed of light this may not be the case. Consult the Stones on their latest astro-physical theories.
