The Bus Trip From Hell
Posted by: flilflam ()

In 1994, my wife and I attended our first Stones concert at Ohio Stadium. A charter bus had been arranged by a rock station out of Charleston, WV to carry about 30 fans to the stadium and pick us up after the concert and take us back to where we were parked. The two DJ's, who were probably drunk, persuaded the bus driver to stop at a liquor store where most of us, including me, purchased drinks, which were consumed on the bus as we drove to Columbus. Several people on the back of the bus were smoking pot and drinking. One man, who should never have been allowed on the bus, was very drunk and was encouraged to drink even more. As a result, he became sick, defecated, and told to leave the bus.The DJ's told the driver to pull over at a rest stop, whereupon the man was left with no one to assist him. Also, the DJ's began calling one young man, who was by himself, a gay person. Several Negro jokes were made by these men. Unbeknownst to them, there was a Negro on the bus who could have easily passed for a Caucasian with a good tan. On the positive side, they did play a lot of loud Stones music on the way to Columbus.

I am not a prude by any means but we were shocked at the bad jokes about gay people and n------, and the callous way a sick man was treated. I have no problem with people smoking in the privacy of their houses. The black man reported the DJ's to the station, and one of them was fired. I wonder what might have happened if the police had pulled the bus over. Would we have all been guilty of drunk driving or some other offense.

I have been reading about a possible bus trip to Colunbus. Do what you wish, but I would ask a lot of questions before I would pay the bus fare.

You're not kidding, a very good reason to be left behind.....still, a more positive story than what happened to a friend of mine who had a ticket for a coach trip and the Stones at Twickenham London in 2006.........the coach didn't show up.....confused smiley

Without getting too worked-up over your unfortunate usage of the backward term, 'negro', I do find myself sympathising. What a ghastly experience it must have been for you.

Minus the use of the N word you've just experienced a normal day for the band and the crew during the 1979 New Barbarians tour! thumbs up

Now don't ask me who would have played the part of the "poo man" >grinning smiley<

Just wondering what You Did to help the sick man and stand up for the two you men being harassed by the DJs?

Or would that have meant possibly missing the concert so everybody stayed quiet...

Oh, really? Okay, then. It's just that I thought the word is from a bygone age when too many felt the black citizens of the world to be lesser beings. It's a word bestowed upon them by some white people, and thus, it is wrong.

When people take offense, the word should die.

What is stupid is that some people never read between the lines, when they read or hear the word "negro" or "faggot" they will assume that the person is a retard (oh, this word is offensive, too). On the contrary there are people who are really offensive when they speak in a polite manner.

I do use these words because - let's be honest - "negro" sounds better than "Afro-American" or "a Black person" and "faggot" sounds much better than "homosexual" or "gay". When hearing this word some may have its "offensive history" in mind, not me. Oh, actually, I am not that stupid, I know this word sounds offensive, that is why it sounds so great. Call me racist if you want!

So, you mean that the one saying the words should determine whether they're acceptable or not – not the ones who find them offensive?

Interesting...

As it's Spanish and Spanish is the 2nd most widely spoken language worldwide after Mandarin, you're not going to be disappointed....

Why an English speaker would want to use the Spanish word for black when we English speakers already have a word for black - black - I've got no idea...

Unless their intention is to just be an agent provocateur,,,,,,,oh, wait a minute I've just used a French term when I could just have easily used 'shit stirrer'........hmmmmm

But no, carry on, next time you're in a boxing gym in South London...test the courage of your convictions...go on..........let us know what happns....

Dandelion, I don't want to start a "ethics of conviction versus ethics of responsibility" debate that we've already heard too many times after the recent terrorists events. You wrote "when people take offense, the word should die". Are you serious? Many words should die then, and, sadly, many books censored. If people are offended by a word this does not mean they are right. I wrote "offended by a word", not "offended by a word in a racist context". There are Jews who are offended by Wagner, I seriously hope you will never ban his music. Negro = Black. Period. Read the etymology (I don't say this just as an excuse to explain my opinion, I always read the etymology of some words, this explains a lot of things). This word has already been used by many writers or songwriters, not always the racist ones, and if you replace the word "negro" with "black" it just does not sound great. Now we can't use this word just because it also has an "offensive history"? Some Israelis do not want Wagner's music to be played in their country... can I just disagree with them without sounding presumptuous or without being accused of "lack of respect"? If I like how this word sounds I can't use it anymore? Hey, I don't like the idea of a language whose only purpose is to be understood. "You can use black instead". I don't want to use Black, it just means the same thing as "negro" used in a non-racist context but it is ugly as hell.

How many more hours to hell? That trip bores me stiff.

As it's Spanish and Spanish is the 2nd most widely spoken language worldwide after Mandarin, you're not going to be disappointed....

BTW, Eddie, don't get me wrong, but since I am indeed a whee bit disappointed, and, for correctness of the record, that cited Spanish word negro is derived from the Latin word niger = black and is found in similar forms in numerous languages today, Spanish being merely one of the Latin languages having adopted that word.

Moreover, the most widely spoken languages (number of total speakers in brackets) are English (1,500 mn), Chinese/Mandarin (1,100 mn), Hindi/Urdu = Hindustani (466 mn) and, at rank 4, Spanish (420 mn).

And, fliflam, have you finally reached Ohio Stadium? I hope you're not still stuck on the bus.

You're excluding all the history behind this. It's a very important part of why a group of people find that word offensive. I don't think you have the right to determine how they should take it.

But, by all means, who am I to judge? Just stating my opinion.
