If you try to find a copy of the "VIDEO CD" of Live at the Max, -
you´ll get yourself a pleasent surprise !

It has a completely different "sound" than the DVD-audio, - much more like
a real live-album ! !

The Video-CD was a shortlived medium, - which lost the battle to the DVD.
It can´t be played on a normal CD-player, - you´ll have to use a multiplayer
that can read DVDs, - but it acts just like a regular CD, - with no
root-menu.
Should be possible to find quite cheap !

Henri,

Interesting - Found a few on EBay but looked like they were all European sellers. So, does this format play on US DVD players?

Hmmm - Actually I think so ! - and especially if you just want to play
the audio, - but no guarantee . . . .

To my previous knowledge, this Video-CD was released in the UK, - Hong Kong
& Taiwan, - and was a completely new media.

Live at The Max is the Rolling Stones-"product" that has been released on most
different medias.
Originally on IMAX-CINEMA, - on Laserdisc, - on Video-CD, - on VHS, - Betamax (?)
and on DVD.

On Wiki you can read about the difficulties of recording and mixing the original audio for the IMAX-CINEMA,
- and it must have been pure hell transferring it to the
other medias.
I have lost my VHS years ago, - and I don´t remember how it sounded, -
and have no idea about the Laserdisc, - (If someone owns it, - and can play it,
please let us know !)
- but I can tell, that there is a great difference from the Video-CD to the DVD !

I´m pretty sure, that the Video-CD had no regional codes, -
they came with the DVD-technology.

Henri, thanks!

The drum sound on the dvd is too "crisp," the guitars are too treble sounding and bass is non existent.

Will look into that Video-CD technology.

Thank you!

So with the video cd will it play on a DVD player? Or even a PC? I'm guessing maybe on a DVD player like you say it may just recognise it as a audio cd

Video CD (or, VCD) is a uniquely Asian format. VHS tapes don't do well in the humid climate, so a cheap, durable format was developed. I've purchased a number of VCDs of Hong Kong movies and some J-pop. I've never had a problem playing them in my USA DVD player. A couple of drawbacks: no extras or even chapters--just drop it in and hit play. Also, because they are a low(er) cost alternative to DVDs, the resolution may be lower than DVD.

I have never heard of this. Is the sound completely different mixed (like the JJF single B-sides) oder is it just the mastering?

A bit confused ! - ?
How did the Woodoo Lounge Tour, - Japan ´95 -
end up at the "Live at the Max"-thread - ? ? ?

If anyone has the "Live at the Max"-laser-CD -
please stand up and tell us all about it !

FYI...I have the 45 single for Jumping Jack Flash b/w Tumbling Dice and TD sounds just like the mix from the dvd with the instruments and vocals way up front the way they sound on the video. As I remember, the b-sides on the cd singles were the same.

I have the "Live At The Max" LaserDisc but it must have been ages since I've watched it the last time. As far as I can remember the sound wasn't significant (better) compared with the VHS-tape. Ok, less hiss but a somehow flat sound - like the LSTNT LD. Easy to forget about it.

I have the Tokyo LD as well but I think I've never played it.

Somehow the format (LaserDisc) didn't age very well...thumbs down

Yeah !
Haven´t got the 7" - but the CD-single, - yellow and black cover, -
with the gas-mask.
JJF, - Tumblin´ Dice & Street Fighting Man -
and talking about different productions ! - the TD & SFM are so strangely
produced and mixed, - that I thought they were different takes !
EVERY audience-sound- & atmosphere is removed ! -
I had to play it simultaneously with the DVD before I had to accept they actually
ARE the same takes !

At least they left the Mick screw up in IORR (5:23). Clearly a lot of filming scerwups during this tune.

Great feedback ! - Thank you !

On Video-CD, - Live at the Max, - and the Gimme Shelter movie exists !
The audio from "Gimme Shelter" is of no interest . . .
but still think the audio of Video-CD Live at the Max is significant !

Nobility manners from Sir Michael in that clip?: "I'll bet you think you're the only pussy in town?". Spoken to the same young girl he dashes on her bottom while she's being introduced...

Recently I acquired the VCD of Live at the Max. I could play it with VLC Media Player (Videolan). Also I could rip the audio of it (as two long files, no tracks separation).I ripped the audio of the DVD Live at the Max too (with tracks separation). Which are the "markers" I should pay attention to to notice the difference?
Has anyone compared the VCD and DVD audio already?

Thanks for all help,
Alex.

I think philrock90 wants the VCD-audio, not the DVD/blu ray audio because it should sound different. I would be very interested too.
