MOST FAVORITE STONES ABLUM COVER IS THE MOST UNEXPECTED
Date: April 30, 2015 16:31

This week I have been ordering a bunch of KINKS albums that my itunes account was missing. I noticed that each album cover seems to feature Ray Davies. Clearly Ray was the inspiration and most important KINK - but one can see that he might have thought that the KINKS were HIS BACKUP BAND - just based on the fact that for very few albums are any bandmates seen on album covers. The Rolling Stones are similarly led by MICK JAGGER. Mick is often featured on some album covers: Tattoo You, Goats Head Soup, Love You Live. More often though, the entire band is featured when there is not some artwork used instead. THIS IS WHY GET YOUR YA YA'S OUT IS THE BEST ALBUM COVER OF ALL TIME. IT IS SIMPLY SO UNEXPECTED THAT CHARLIE WATTS IS FEATURED. AND HIS EXUBERANCE AND SMILE ARE SO UNCHARACTERISTIC (AT LEAST OF HIS PUBLIC PERSONA) GET YOUR YA YA'S OUT - BEST ALBUM COVER (EVER)

Not only us Ya-Ya's a great album cover, it's just a stunning live album! I was a fan of this band for 20 years before I really came to appreicate how excellent Ya-Ya's was! I always liked it, but hadn't reached for it as often. I was so addicted to the 1970's bootlegs ('72 & '73 tour especially), I'd not listened to much '69 stuff. I had Hyde Park, even though they sound woefully out of tune on some tracks, they really sounded good on others.

Re-purchasing 'Gimme Shelter' on DVD last year (had VHS copy for years) was the clincher, seeing that footage again after a long spell not having seen it; also I downloaded the TeagueRaw Remasterand thought it was simply excellent! I think TeagueRaw remastered a different mix that the released version, can't think off-hand; but it sounded amazing.

Long live Ya-Ya's!

I would love a complete 1969 MSG concert on DVD; how special would that be.

Re: Kinks:

What are you talking about? Almost all of the Kinks albums up to "Everybody's In Showbiz" have the entire band on the cover, and those that don't don't have any band members on the cover (like "Arthur" and "Percy"). None of them up to that point feature just Ray. By my count, 27/31 Kinks albums either don't have Ray on the cover at all, or have Ray and the whole band (one, "Phobia", has both Ray and Dave).

I've always thought this was/is a great album cover. Charlie jumping for joy while a rather bored donkey looks on. It seems that the cover gets mixed reviews and I've seen it occasionaly turn up in worst album covers lists - Philistines!

Here it's nr 76.

I like the Ya-Yas cover because it is a direct reference to a line in Bob Dylan's "Visions Of Johanna" - "jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule".

Pretty sure that says "Danke" (German 'Thank You'), which Charlie has been documented as signing.

Amazingly, rock critic Robert Christigau rated Get Yer Ya Yas Out lower than Satanic Majesties.

Danke sounds right to me or I would be questioning Charlie's spelling.

What is he actually signing. "To Thomas, a Danke, Love & Charlie Watts?"

peace

No, I got it on EBAY! I know that's fairly lame...it looks authentic at least to me, and honestly, who's going to fraud MT's signature when they could have forged MJ's, Keith or even Charlie's?

When I was in high school, Tattoo You came out, and I thought that was the coolest ever. I hung it on my wall. Cant really hang an iTunes download on your wall these days!

this is also my favorite stones album cover. so out of character for charlie, so out of character for a rock band to feature their drummer on the cover, and the friggin donkey is priceless.

i never knew the story about the reference to the dylan song, thank you for pointing that out.

Re. fav album covers==All 3 tied for my #1 fav album cover

1) Sticky Fingers-esp. the ones where the zipper really worked on the vinyl LP.

2) Exile On Main Street

3) Goats Head Soup. I like its artsiness, creativity. I get the feeling no one else likes GHS very much (either the music or the album cover)?? but I like both,

In fact, one of my dreams is to go to a Stone's concert with a chiffon scarf on my head, with it sticking up just like on the album- either the color of the original album cover-the golden one on Mick, or else the purple-ish colored one on Mick on the re-mastered GHS cover.(I'm weird that way). But I'd not make it stand up too high because I wouldn't want to block anyone's view who might be standing behind me.(I'm considerate that way).

Thanks for the chance to covercool smiley this topic.

I tried, I looked again... I smh... I looked again, again... and
like Rolling Stones songs... I can not pick only one favorite cover.

There are just too many great Stones songs/covers to pick just one.
My favorites changes like the weather... day by day... mood by mood.

I actually love GHS. Some stone cold Stones classics on that record. Can't say the record cover is my favorite but the music still holds up today!

Nicky Hopkins and Billy Prestons work on that records is fantastic. And when they play together on 100 years ago....sweet!

peace

Leonioid, Ya, it's real hard to choose, that's why I gave mine a 3 way tie...decisions like this could keep a person from sleeping well!

Naturalust-Yay, a GHS songs lover!

You wouldn't believe how many years it took me to figure out who it was on that front cover-- back when I was a kid & would see it in vinyl record stores.-I just thought it was some non-Stone female. It was too confusing for me back then spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
