1970 European Tour - Stones most "perfect" Tour
Posted by: Esky ()

I still believe this 1970 Tour of Europe is not only a forgotten Tour, but I reckon it's the Stones most perfect Tour musically.

Every show is so tight, there are rarely any mistakes (if any at all !), plus it has arguably the greatest Tour setlist of the 1965--1981 era !!

I still think it is under-rated by alot of people, probably because the bootlegs of the Tour are mostly average audience recordings and people with fussy ears simply don't take much notice of the Tour.

The band has matured in years since the 1969 Tour !

Might not be my favourite Tour, but I believe it's the Stones most perfect.

I could see the argument for 1970. Unfortunately, as you state, without any strong audio evidence, folks will largely ignore this tour vis-a-vis 1969. I've never been too impressed by the Roll Over Beethoven's played on this tour - one of their poorer Berry renditions, IMO.

? From the tapes I have, have of the shows sound unrehearsed and you can hear the Stones struggling through too loud amps and too little monitors. It is a forgotten tour yes, but certainly a perfect tour.

I know that at least the consert from Paris was recorded by either the Stones or some radio station, but I wonder if any of the showes were filmed...?
Anyway I've only heard the boots from Paris and Berlin but the Stones shure sounded coolsmiling smiley

A friend of mine mentioned just last night that there is a dearth of recordings from the '70 tour - let alone anything good.

I think I have something like 6 or 7 1970 shows. The Paris soundboard is only so-so in quality. A few of the audience sources aren't that bad, really - but nothing that rivals the better '69 recordings.

I think that must be the boot "Ice cream in the foyer" then. I think it was Munich but is a lucky guess.

Chippy i THINK that is Essen 1970....

The good audience recordings from this tour are:
Hamburg 14/9
Berlin 16/9
Essen 7/10

Paris 23/9 is a "soundboard" rec, but sounds only slightly better than a good audience rec.

In Bill Wyman's book (I think), he mentions that the Stones rehearsed for weeks for the 1970 Tour....to me they sound tight!

Essen 1970. Despite the chatter about the 'dearth' of recordings, nearly every show is recorded. I think it's their best tour, although none of the Paris shows do anything for me.

All the following footage exists in a film archive in North London. The bad news however is that it all seems to be silent. Even so it would be amazing to see the Stones playing with Steve Stills in Amsterdam & Jagger running off stage with a naked woman etc. It would be extremely expensive to get this footage copied though if a wealthy Stones philanthropist on this board were to help out...

wow..this I've never heard of...

was it filmed with a specific project in mind?

Good question Gazza, but I'm afraid I don't know the answer. Perhaps they just had someone film a lot in case they wanted to do something with it later but either it didn't come up to scratch or the '72 tour took precedence and eclipsed the older stuff. Weird how obscure it is though. I want to know what happened to the sound. They must surely have shot it with sound. My guess is that it was on sep mag and got mislaid (hopefully not forever).
