ah so...

"Thanks to Ronnie Wood for not being a quitter of any band for 40 years"smiling smiley

Unfortunately longevity on its own does not translate into greatness. Perhaps it is more a testament to his ability to not rock the boat and know which side his bread is buttered on. None of that has any bearing of the relative quality of his guitar playing. Brownie points for loyalty though.

Anyone else more than me who really digs Ronnie's solo on this version? (Beautiful performance from the whole band btw)

Puts anything Mick Taylor played 1975-2014 to shame!

I USEDTA RIDE BABAE ... RIDEAROUND IN LIMOZINES...

Great song... great performance, I dont know about the MT comparison, but then again I do not really worry that much about that stuff. I feel if it sounds good and fun and I am digging it then that is all I need. If a song sounds fine then I dont usually stand around dreaming scheming and imagining other ways which a song being played should be played better and creating drama like the cult members do.

I think when it is good enough rock and roll, then it good enough rock and roll.

Ronnie does a great job here with the solos, but of course the MTcultist will probably pooh pooh and blah blah all of Ronnie's playing and yadda yadda about his slides not being whatever enough, as they usually do, but frankly playing guitar is not rocket science or brain salad surgery which is worthy of being micro-analyzed to the point of ruining the fun.

If a cat can do the guitar job fine, then fine, and Ronnie has done a fine job for 40 years now and he does great, just like whats-his-name the-quitter-guy played guitar great until he quit and now Ronnie has the job of playing guitar in my favorite band.

Now if we ever start disussing which Doctor will be doing the life saving or life ending operation on someone's loved one, then we can start over worrying and micro-analyzing who might be the best person for the job and then we can discuss who can slide that scalple the best, but when it comes to playing gutar in a rock and roll band it is not that big of a deal, it is only rock a roll and it does not need to be micro analyzed.

Leonioid, for someone who claims not worry about the MT comparisons your post seems to indicate that you care about those comparisons pretty strongly. I don't really think there is much to the actual comparisons. They are too different to actually compare in a meaningful way and those debates have been waged here before. But it's bad form to address your derogatory posts at groups of fans here, we all love the Stones for different reasons. btw: you've seemed to miss the point the Taylor people are making on your favorite "other" thread, it's not about Taylor vs. Wood thing, it's about the possibility of a Richards/Wood/Taylor thing. Nobody is suggesting Taylor replace Wood so keep your shirt on. eye rolling smiley

As far as this thread goes, as I have said before Ronnie does a great job on that tune in 1981, I love it, but I suggest you listen to some of the later versions of the same tune and do an honest comparison. I've posted one from 2013 for your convenience, compare the solos. Ronnie has quit playing it well. That's the issue, we all know he hasn't quit the Stones, just quit playing truly exciting parts.

peace

When I look at the history of my other favourite band: they had a fantastic guitar player for three years, who got fired because of his alcoholism. When I listen to the following live recording at first I can't help but think that it would have been better with him. The new guitar player did the job. But there's no "grace". That being said this live album gives me chills because both the drummer and the singer were fantastic. I mean, they were so great that I almost forget about the guitarists issues. If only the others Stones members were that great...

I must admit that was indeed an excellent performance by Ronnie. The tone and playing were both just great. I just wonder why he can't play like that anymore? Compare that solo to the one he did in this 2013 show. To be fair the rest of the band weren't as hot as in that 1981 clip either but the solos are day and night.

I love that Glastonbury solo actually. Ronnie was on that night. I also agree with 71Tele that the original Maggie May solo is his greatest. It's actually my favorite guitar solo of all time. It's not fast or flashy or fancy in any way. It's just perfect. Nothing else comes close.

Solo? I wouldn't call that a solo. Like many of his attempts it starts by copying the original followed by some pointless notes and a little fast playing on two notes or something.

Do other band fan sites have people who join just to rip apart current members?

I am always surprised at the complete meanness of some of the comments here.

I actually would not know about other band fan sites. I have some social awkwardness and intense interests with few hobbies but a major preoccupation is The Rolling Stones so forgive me at my complete lack of understanding as to why you would bother to post negative comments about band members.

Ticket prices, ok sure, venues, ok sure but actually slamming band members. Wow!

It's only disappointment that needs to be vented now and again. Some old fans never got over Taylor quitting, while others got their fix on the last tours and want more.

They need a scape goat.

The irony is that these two guitarists respect eachother a lot and keep on collaborating, something they have done since 1974. The Taylorites should ask themselves why they're doing that...

I think the relative, or even complete anonymity offered on IORR would lead some people to consciously or otherwise, remove their 'filter' and just say the first thing that comes to their mind.

I have to catch myself sometimes as well, and have even on occasion gone back and edited my own post when I've reread it and thought, "did I write that?".

I agree with you 110%, but it seems once the MTcult members are brain washed
they will post the most bizarre things online, things I doubt most of them
would say unbrainwashed to anyones face, like if they met Ronnie Wood.

I also agree with you about They posted that on a RS fan site?
It seems there is not a proper MTcult fan site so the cultist have to show
up here to bash on Ronnie Wood's playing and slam on the band for not
getting down on their hands and knees and kissing whats-his-names feet
as if he was doing the band a huge favor by finally realizing that he made
a huge mistake quitting the band 40 years ago, and now wants back in the band.

Probably yes because other bands dont get away with anything. The Stones do because they are the Stones. Ronnies solo on that video sucks big time. Sorry but that's a fact. He can deliever and he sure used to but no he wasnt hired because of his skills.

I got over Taylor because I became a fan during the Ronnie-Era. Although a fan of the Jones era at first. Then i Looked at photos of Ronnie and thought wow he is so much cooler than that boring dude they had after Brian. And LYL sounded great, Ronnie is good on that album. Then later I discovered Taylor thru the greatness of Keith in the early to mid 70s. Then came the live boots from 1972 and 1973. And that really sealed the deal. BUt I didnt really think less of Ronnie. And then came the boots from the Ronnie years. And that made me think twice about LYL and overdubs. I like the early Ronnie-era but that doesnt have anything to do with today. Ronnie fans: get over it, he was almost fired in 1981! winking smiley

The only reason Ronnie is in the band since 1989 is the deal Mick made with Keith in order to continue his (Micks) career. His solo career failed and the band has to include what the public thinks is the band.

That said I'm also a fan of Ronnie work with Rod. thumbs up

I don't think Ronnie's solo suck in that video. It's not good and it's just a the verge of sounding bad. However, I think Taylor is equally bad in this video, barley hitting the right notes:

What do you mean Mick Taylor cult?? Ive never even been a serious fan of his and yet it's really easy to hear how f-ing great he was and the band was when he was in the band. Thats not even up for debate. And I love some of the 1981 era, and really like or love the 1975 and 1976 and 1977 and 1978 versions of the band too.
Still, the Taylor years are pure gold and so much better overall.

If there's a cult Id say it's the blind worship of everything Mick and Keith does today. This is music, not soccer. C'mon.

It's really weak solo by Taylor standards but you can tell in a sec. that he's a real guitar player. But yes, he can do better. and you are comparing a guy who hasnt played with them or rehearsed since 1973/1974 with Ronnie who has been in the band since 1975.
