Just caught this on a Dylan site. Interesting read. Prowl through the clips on utoob for some nice tastes of her performing through the years. She could play that guitar just like ringin' a bell. Now we know where Chuck copped part of his style.

I was embarrassed that I had never heard of her until a couple years ago watching some Women Who Rock thing I think on PBS, and they showed a clip of her (I think the 'Didn't It Rain' at the train tracks clip- AWESOME) and I was like "who is that??" Watch that clip and tell me you don't see some of Keith's (and just about any other guitarist) moves there! And yeah - how many years before Chuck Berry?? You see her influence in everyone from Springsteen (This train...) to many others. I did not realize how big a star she was too for awhile. A collection of her stuff is well worth hunting down. Phenomenal.

over a brunch of chilaquiles somone told me about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I'd never heard of her, but this video of a gospel queen arriving in rainy Manchester in 1964 to is just superb. She straps on an electric guitar, and man! I'm sure young Mick and Keith saw this.
