OT: Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Just caught this on a Dylan site. Interesting read. Prowl through the clips on utoob for some nice tastes of her performing through the years. She could play that guitar just like ringin' a bell. Now we know where Chuck copped part of his style.

A touch of the blues with her. This should be, IMHO, the way the Stones do their tours for now on - nuttin but the basics.

She was great.

I highly recommend the DVD "The Great American Folk Blues Festival - The British Tours". It includes that version of Didn't it Rain posted on the Guardian article.

I was embarrassed that I had never heard of her until a couple years ago watching some Women Who Rock thing I think on PBS, and they showed a clip of her (I think the 'Didn't It Rain' at the train tracks clip- AWESOME) and I was like "who is that??" Watch that clip and tell me you don't see some of Keith's (and just about any other guitarist) moves there! And yeah - how many years before Chuck Berry?? You see her influence in everyone from Springsteen (This train...) to many others. I did not realize how big a star she was too for awhile. A collection of her stuff is well worth hunting down. Phenomenal.

...called the Godmother of Rock and Roll would have been a hundred years
old today had she lived. She died, 58 years old, (due to a stroke) in October
1973 and was elected in to the Blues Hall of Fame in 2008.

over a brunch of chilaquiles somone told me about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I'd never heard of her, but this video of a gospel queen arriving in rainy Manchester in 1964 to is just superb. She straps on an electric guitar, and man! I'm sure young Mick and Keith saw this.

Enjoy on a sunday

So SHE was the woman shredding up on the train station.
I saw that in a documentary once, what a place for a show!
