Rolling Stones Albums, Ranked Worst to Best (Ultimate Classic Rock)
Posted by: kowalski ()
Date: March 13, 2015 06:24

[ultimateclassicrock.com]

Ranking goes like this :

Dirty Work
Bridges To Babylon
Undercover
A Bigger Bang
Voodoo Lounge
Steel Wheels
It's Only Rock'n Roll
Black And Blue
December's Children
Their Satanic Majesties Request
Emotional Rescue
12 x 5
Tattoo You
Goats Head Soup
England's Newest Hit Makers
Now!
Out Of Our Heads
Aftermath
Between The Buttons
Some Girls
Beggars Banquet
Sticky Fingers
Let It Bleed
Exile On Main St.

It looks like quite a safe list. Too bad they didn't included the live albums though.

This magazine appears to be an elderly magazine...so unnatural, so artifical...

Lists can be discussed endlessly. But I don't like that B2B and UC are the two lowest rated albums. (It was a no brainer that DW would take the top/bottom spot)

I guess mine would go like this:

A Bigger Bang
Dirty Work
Voodoo Lounge
Steel Wheels
12X5
Emotional Rescue
Their Satanic Majesties Requests
Decembers' Children
Now!
It's Only R&R
Out Of Our Heads
Tattoo You
Black & Blue
Goat's Head Soup
Aftermath
Bridges 2 Babylon
Undercover
Between The Buttons
Some Girls
Let It Bleed
Hitmakers
Beggar's Banquet
Sticky Fingers
Exile

It's all relative. E.g. 12x5 or Emotional Rescue are fairly far down, but in the big picture they are still some of my favoritr albums and I listen to them a lot.

Interesting DP...

Undercover that much ahead of Exile in your opinion?

I love Undercover too, But that late night early morning feel on Exile got me long ago..

Can't choose between Exile, Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed, or between Aftermath/Goats Head Soup. That is like choosing between Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, Wagner and Brahms, or between your right ball and your left ball I guess.

I've listened too much to it. Same with many of the others from the golden era, hence "at the moment" smiling smiley

If I would rank the albums now, delete it, rank them again... I would have 2 different lists.

Only: Dirty Work is the worst. 12x5 would rank lower than most, Undercover much higher.

Yeah, this reflects rather closely a standard rock journalism view of their output. It is clear what are the masterpieces and most important albums. Also that whatever post-TATTOO YOU is doomed secondary rate. The difficulties concern how to rate their early albums, and like usually, they are rated rather high.

In difference to the discussions here in IORR among us hardcores, the worth of UNDERCOVER and BRIDGES TO BABYLON are not acknowledged yet.

In my ranking there's only three types of Rolling Stones albums:

Those that can be listened to every day for the rest of my life,
those that can be listened to every week for the rest of my life,
those that can be listened to every month for the rest of my life
and still get me rocking.

6 albums are of the first category, 15 in the second group and 3 in the last one.

I guess that makes me a fan.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Currently I listen more to Undercover, ER and the first two albums than the 4 usual suspects, though I know they are by far much better. BTB is on regular rotation too...

I guess what makes me a fan is I always go back checking on Dirty Work to see if it's really that bad and to finally find it quite enjoyable.

What strikes me on the list is not so much the rankings, as most people will agree/disagree somewhat, or that Dirty Work is at the bottom (of course).

What I find quite stunning is how absolutely bullet proof the catalogue looks through the 50 years.

Even if you agree with the premise that the 80s onward was a slide in quality (I don't necessarily), look what else is in their bottom third:

It's Only Rock'n Roll
Black And Blue

It's easier for me to understand why we like this band so much, not by their best albums, but by what is considered their worst albums.

After 50 years, what's not to like?! (OK, Dirty Work).

Making a list is almost impossible for me. And it will change from time to time. Let it bleed will probably go as the best any time. Then when I listen to voodoo lounge for the first time in a while I will often think that is a great one. And the same with Tattoo you, Aftermath and Exile and so on... But then again I tend to listen more often to LIB than to Dirty work. So some will always be more liked than others....

Any magazine/ journalist/ music 'fan'/ family member/ etcetera that thinks he/she should put "Black and Blue", "It's Only Rock'n'Roll", and even "A Bigger Bang" and/or "Voodoo Lounge" BEHIND Stanic Majesties, is either stark raving drunk or completely bonkers, but in any case rapidly on the way off of my cloud.
