OT: Robin Trower

Ok, so every time I see that Robin Thick thread I think someone has posted about Robin Trower!

Which I will do now, as he is an amazing guitarist with one of the all time best tones for a lead guitarist. And he is still alive and he has lost none of his chops!

I saw him live a few years ago and it was amazing! I love Bridge of Sighs and would like to get more of his stuff. So this is a shout out to fellow Robin Trower fans!

He did a lot of great stuff in the 70s for sure. Actually he just released a new album, need to check his touring schedule!

Seeing him in Glasgow on 4th April. Support is Joanne Shaw Taylor who's just getting better and better.

Saw him in 2012 or 2013 in Oberhausen, Germany. One of the chronically underrated Blues- and Rock-guitarists. It isn't fair to diminish him as a simple Hendrix epigone.

"The Playful Heart" album from 2010 was exceptional. The two since are only good as sleeping aids.

I only have him with Procol, and on the orchestral Long Goodbye Procol tribute.

I also have him on Seven Moons with Jack Bruce, but thanks for hipping me to his solo stuff.

Robin Trower is a great guitarist. I have a long history with him before I actually even knew him. My friend, whose a guitar player, was always mentioning this guy Robin Trower and he mentions all these unknown people all the time I never gave it a second thought. Never played me any music though. Years later, my dad, a gigantic Procol Harum fan, is playing me their music and saying "that Robin Trower man". And I was like "what?! Thats who this guy is?!" Told him and my friend what they had in common and they got a laugh out of it. Oddly enough, my friend never knew anything Procol, and just Robin on his own, and my dad ditched Robin once he went solo.

My two cents is I love him in Procol. He's not the "sound" of Procol Harum, but he was key and actually hardly used to his full potential. Procol was never about guitar solos and stuff like that so he was always used well, but you could tell he was being held back. He actually gets the most time on his last album with them which is Broken Barricades, and gets a full song himself, Song For A Dreamer, which hadn't been done in Procol at that time. IMO, thats the worst and most boring song on the album, which is sad cause he's so great on everything else. From what I've heard, that song is a big indicator of what his solo material sounds like, and I guess it was just one of those things where the guitarist is great, but he went off to do totally different stuff. I could obviously be wrong since I never did that much research, but that first song he got alone was not a good indicator of things to come.

Anyway, love him as a guitarist. Would love to see him live, because he's around my area a lot and he's old so there's probably only so much time left, but he never plays any Procol stuff and never has. Its almost like he completely blocks that stuff out live, which I get and don't at the same time. I know he rejoined them for an album in the 90s, but he never went back to tour with them or anything. Sad, cause I'd love to see that Harum lineup. But yeah, great unknown guitarist, who just sadly never blossomed in his best band, and then lost me when he went solo. Kind of different than Taylor who was never underused in the Stones IMO.

Saw Trower back in the 70's (at the Santa Monica Civic). He was 2nd bill to Spooky Tooth and the show was a sell out.

By the time Trower finished his set and Spooky Tooth started there's there were probably less than 100 people left in the venue.

Spooky must of loved that!

Saw Trower with Jethro Tull and Rory Gallagher at Shea Stadium in Queens, NY in 1976. This was Tull's "Tullavision" tour/concert. Probably close to 50,000 fans, they had these large screens (Tullavision) around the stage. Not a big fan of stadium shows, although I did like the Stones Stadium show in Orlando in 1981...

I also saw him at the Santa Monica Civic c.80 as headliner for his Victims of The Fury tour.
A couple of songs from that album actually got alot of radio airplay - at least in the L.A area.

As a 17 year old at the time I was ecstatic to see him live, and while the above mentioned album was decent, it seemed a bit of a rehash of the Bridge of Sighs album - his absolute best imo.
Don't know much about his studio output after that, but I know he still tours all the time playing mostly clubs and dinner theaters.

Robin Trower was a great opening act for The Rolling Stones in The Hague 1976 and my favorite album is Bridge Of Sighs.
Upcoming RT concerts: March 19-20 and 22 in The Netherlands 2015.

Amazing song. Is there a later album up there with Bridge Of Sighs or For Earth Below?

At the time he got a lot of flak for sounding like Hendrix. But hey, if you're going to sound like anyone, that's not a bad one to go for!

Title cut from his first solo album. Great power trio along with Cream and Rush. Robin just turned 70 three days ago!
