Watched this like five times since I posted, and it just hit me. Chuck Leavell is great on this.

Bobby and Mick Taylor are the show during the jam. And Charlie is of course fantastic, the foundation of the whole thing. But Chuck is playing the perfect complementary role.

It was great for him to have been brought in from the wilderness. But it was also clear that he didn’t have much left in the tank.

This is the first time I've ever found myself disagreeing with something you've written.

He had his moments in 2013-14, to be sure. What I said comes from a place of reverence. I recently saw a clip of playing “Red House” in the late-‘80s. I was struck by how good he still was — and how differently and expansively he was able to improvise. He’s a long way from where he was then.

I don't think anybody is where they were in the 80's. That said, only getting a couple songs a night at that age isn't the best indicator of how much he had in the tank IMO. I'm not advocating he should have been on the stage for every song, but it would have been clear in that case vs a guest spot without really warming up. I say this as a musician.

One of Taylor's best imo:

Seemingly the guitar was built for him by a French luthier whose name I forgot.

Still waiting indeed. Some fine lounge music.

New to me: Keith, Ronnie, and Bob Dylan talking candidly about Mick Taylor during Live Aid rehearsals.

Inconsistency and a tendency to overplay — combined with what seemed to Keith to be shyness that bordered on inscrutability. Poor MT.

Being in a band is not unlike a regular office environment; people naturally gravitate toward a personality like Ronnie’s.

Talent and aptitude are far from the whole picture.

FABULOUS. I'm completely embarrassed. I didn't know he sings!

I think it is a Vigier (french guitar brand, [www.vigierguitars.com])

Fantastic guitars from a technical viewpoint...but perhaps a bit lacking in character for the Luddites amongst us.

[In other words they're too bloody good by half ! ]

If they tour one last time I would really like to see MT back and fully rehearsed and musically incorporated in the band. It would be four living Sones on one stage. It really is late in life not to put the quality of their live music first. How many times Sadly old rockers are passing and it seems time waits for no one.

I think you're voicing a sentiment that many of us would share ...but it ain't gonna happen.

I hear Taylor got a great sound out of it, and I see the neck and tremelo bar inspired him well.

Never say never, and would hope for that to happen also. thumbs up
But realistically, if he never performs with them live again, maybe he will be invited to guest on a song (or two or three) on what could very well be there last new album.
Surely his playing would be a welcome addition that most fans would appreciate - he would add a variety of qualities that Ronnie's playing sorely lacks to be quite frank.
But we don;t even know for sure if there will ever be a new Stones album...just a lot of hot air from the band over the years..."working on it", "sounds great", "blah, blah, blah".

Keith scaufs at Mick Taylor taking 5 years to put out an album, how ironic.

Not really. We're talking, after all, when they were already twenty years into a then-prolific career, 39 years ago.
