That's bunk.

Mick Taylor left.

He quit The Rolling Stones.

Plenty to read wherever. Look at the 1969 press conference: he looks like he's in high skool.

Dragged along, did whatever - it doesn't matter what the Stones could've been if he'd stayed. He wanted out and he got out.

Nobody suffered. Oh except for playing acoustic guitar for Satisfaction during FIFTY.

A shame. And a sham.

Then the YouTube link gives false info.I must have misjudged my first guitar hero. Although the CB riff sounds very much like Taylor's playing on highway 69 with Bob Dylan in Wembley 1984.

I liked the San Diego show, it's just flabbergasting that Mick T has been doing these shows for so long. IMHO he should've been a big star even after leaving the lads. I am so grateful and happy he mellowed and embraced us fans during the last 25 years. He just grows and grows in my book, A Stone's Throw is one of my favourite records of all time

Rolling Stones rocker Mick Taylor stunned to learn ‘stolen’ guitar somehow wound up at Met Museum

It’s a rock ’n’ roll mystery — call it the case of the “Sticky Fingers!”

Mick Taylor — who played with the Rolling Stones from 1969 to 1974, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 1989 — was surprised to discover that a long-lost Les Paul guitar used on the band’s 1972 album “Exile on Main St.” recently resurfaced at the Met, we’re told.

The Stones’ French villa was infamously robbed when they were holed up there nearly 54 years ago.

A rock historian and Stones fan said of the incident: “Villa Nellcôte was such an open house that, one day in September 1971, burglars walked out of the front gate with nine of [Keith] Richards’ guitars, Bobby Keys’ saxophone and Bill Wyman’s bass in broad daylight .?.?.The crime was reputedly carried out by [drug] dealers from Marseille who were owed money by Richards.”

Cut to May of this year. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced a “landmark gift of more than 500 of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitarmaking,” including a “1959 sunburst Les Paul guitar used by Keith Richards during the Rolling Stones’ first appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ in 1964,” plus instruments used by Roy Rogers, Mississippi John Hurt and many more.

Now Taylor’s business manager and partner, Marlies Damming, says that Richards sold that same Les Paul to Taylor.

Damming said via a statement: “There are numerous photos of Mick Taylor playing this Les Paul, as it was his main guitar until it disappeared. The interesting thing about these vintage Les Pauls (from the late 1950s), is that they are renowned for their flaming .?.?. which is unique, like a fingerprint.”

A collection of guitars — including one Keith Richards played on “The Ed Sullivan” show — was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

A source added, “Taylor says he never received compensation for the theft and is mystified as to how his property found its way into the Met’s collection.”

A rep for the Met did not immediately comment, and an adviser for Dirk Ziff, the collector who made the donation, did not get back to us.

Stay tuned! We need to ask Keef!

When Taylor can prove it's actually his guitar, it seems to me that he can make half a fortune, if not more.

How are they advertising it as Richards guitar? If that's been proven, then it seems easy to me to connect the dots as Richards sold it to Taylor.

As far as I understand it, Taylor bought that guitar from Keith while he (Taylor) was still playing with John Mayall. Some one correct If I'm wrong.

That's correct. Taylor and Keith didn't meet, Stu made the transaction.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a history of acquiring stolen or illegally obtained artifacts and paintings. Recently they had to return a priceless Greek vase to Greece.

I hope that Stu did a proper job: write down buyer, seller, both signed, and the guitar + serial number, and Taylor still has the original transaction on paper.

Or The Rolling Stones office.

If they’re advertising it as Keith’s guitar, how are they explaining it got to where it is? Seems like an easy case if they can prove it’s Keith’s guitar.

If it's Keith's guitar, Jane Rose has to take action on behalf of Keith's orders.

[pagesix.com]

It's a total bullshit story, and Marlies Damming is (again and again) talking utter rubbish and bullshit.

Taylor owned this guitar as we all know, but mainly used it as a backup for his Gibson SG, which he used just about 100% of the time. He had a second 1959 Burst that he used sparingly on the 1970 and 1971 tours, still favoring his SG.

There's two stories on how he lost the guitar: Taylor left the guitar on a platform while changing trains, somewhere on the 1970 European Tour. This story was also told by Robert Greenfield, and by Taylor's later tech, Hiroshi Suzuki, who was consulted when the guitar was offered at Christie's in 2004. This story was later again told when it sold in 2006 via two renowned vintage guitar experts.

The Nellcote story comes into play for the second story: there was a robbery, where they stole guitars (strangely, none of Taylor), and Taylor did sell some instruments in 1971-1974 to sustain his habits. It's to detailed for this board, but there have accusations from the inner circle to Taylor and his then wife that they sold items from the Stones camp to sustain their drug habits. Taylor did sell some Strats and Tele's in the mid-1970's, he sold Brian Jones's Firebird in the late 1970's, as well as the two Bursts used on the 1972 and 1973 tours.

Several people have stated that Taylor did not leave the guitar at a platform, but sold it in London in late 1970 or early 1971 to sustain some habits. To me, this story always has made more sense, as Taylor never made an attempt to get the guitar back, nor did anyone in the Stones camp, even though they knew where the guitar was in the 1970's. My feeling is that they just didn't care enough, as they never really liked the guitar all that much.

I spoke with Taylor multiple times in the 2004 -2006 era, and we also discussed this guitar -he was not interested in it at all, and said 'it was a dog'. I even spoke to Marlies about it, no interest whatsoever.

The whereabouts of this guitar have always been known, and nobody doubted the origins. This leaves me to believe that Taylor sold the guitar, and that there never was any foul play.

He sold the ‘bursts from 72/73, oof!

What happened to the SG? (was it actually the short lived run of Les Paul’s before they became the SG?)

He sold the Bursts in 1982 or early 1983 to a London shop to finance his relocation to the USA. Apparently he got 10K UK Pounds for it. Both were then sold in the shop within a couple of weeks, for 6K each, without any reference to Taylor.

The SG was a 1964, and given to Taylor's brother in law musician and producer Robin Millar. To solve tuning issues a luthier installed a truss rod, ruining the guitar. The current whereabouts are unknown.

The question is what Taylor really said. After all, the quote is not attributed to Taylor himself but to a "source". Perhaps he was only asked if he knew how the guitar got to the Met and he said he doesn't know - which would likely be correct.
