He's also called Taylor a virtuoso and said he probably got bored. The quote of him getting in the way was second hand from a man who has passed on. Keith has never directly said that, he has too much respect for the man. Hell, he learned licks from him! All one needs to do is listen to 72-73 Rocks Off to understand how freaking well they played together.

You think Johns made it up?

«I don't know that Mick Taylor ever really fit in... (One time Keith turned to Mick Taylor and said) @#$%& you! You play too loud. You're really good live, but you're no good in the studio. So you can play later... (Taylor) was whining and moaning: I never get to do what I want, and I don't think I'm going to be able to do this much longer. And I'm going, What? Are you crazy? You're going to quit the Stones? You're out of your @#$%& mind!»

- Andy Johns

No I don't think he made it up, but I feel like the whol "Taylor didn't fit in in the studio" stuff is nonsense. He contributed wonderfully to many songs and was very enthusiastic about playing bass whenever he could.

His supposed not fitting in could relate more to the bullshit that surrounded stones sessions.

I can picture Taylor often being frustrated and bored shitless by the take after take approach. Coming from the punctual or get fined, 1 or 2 take Bluesbreakers to stones sessions, the selfish lack of concern for turning up on time by Jagger Richards must have been quite eye opening, challenging, frustrating and very very boring.

perhaps if he had stayed they would have taken ron wood on anyway and gone to a 6- man lineup.

wyman or taylor playing bass (to relieve keith of playing bass on so many tracks)
wood/richards on guitar

could have been amazing!

They would have dismissed Taylor anyway, sooner or later.

Very very likely.

While I totally agree with you I will point out that all studio work is generally a lot more boring that people may realize. Down time, other people doing overdubs, sitting around listening to the same song over and over, tweaking small aspects of the mixes and recordings. But in the case of the 1974 Stones and Mick Taylor I imagine it was almost torture. I attribute some of this to the state Keith was in at the time. Selfish, irritable, stoned, cynical is how I imagine he was, hard to be around under any circumstances. I also speculate that looking at Keith reminded him of his own problems and that couldn't have been easy.

Small wonder that Keith Richards edited it while mixing the album.
According to various sources.

Mick Taylor is simply outstanding in the 1969-1972 era.

Why not?

Also his solo on a apolitical blues is brilliant.
I love his solo on the studiò version of Twisted Sister.
