Yes, its a shame.

Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood. If they were both utilized to their fullest abilities together, I have little doubt that would make the Stones swan song nothing short of epic.

But it's just not going to happen.

As much as I love MT, I was bored to death by that 5 minute solo in the clip posted above...not his best work by a long shot. More interaction with Keith and Ronnie, sweet tasty fills and rhythm work, not this spotlight solo like the Stones are your backing band stuff.

Besides, I think it's going to take a whole set with the Stones for him to warm up, and I think I know just the songs from which record which would work perfectly..grinning smiley

peace

I dream about them playing leads on SFTD and elsewhere and it is indeed epic!

So... if they had played it in 1971 and 1972 and 1973 would it still have been a "spotlight solo like the Stones are" Taylor's "backing band"?

Taylor's fusion style of playing doesn't mix well with the Stones these days. You might say that he's too sophisticated for them or you might say he's boring and outdated.
Either way - the chemistry simply isn't there. At least not live in concert. Personally I hope they skip both CYHMK and MR this time around. We have heard them too well before.
Let's do something fresh (which I realize is something of an anomaly when we are talking Stones in the 21th century...).

Taylor only plays this section of the song on his solo gigs. Probably a pre-requisite and/or something the Stones thought was cool to do that way for the prodigal son. I understand what NL is saying, but also why the Stones did it that way.

IYCRM, Ventilator Blues or MM would be cool as well.

If Taylor were to be utilized on more songs the band would need to rehearse with him for months, for their last few tours they have only rehearsed for a week to ten days, generally MT is only there for a couple of those days. If they ARE going to play SF in its entirety and the first show of the tour is at the end of May then they should start rehearsals in mid April.

If Taylor were to be utilized on more songs the band would need to rehearse with him for months,

its only rock n' roll..

I thought he sounded fine on Slipping Away (Rome). It's not all about long solos. It's speculation on our part what is going on in the band and for what reasons. Some of us realize a possibility for something great with Mick Taylor on board. If not, I can imagine the concerts will still be pretty great. I like the idea of playing Red Rocks. Hope it will be professionally recorded.

1000% accurate Mick Taylor is sorely needed otherwise my beloved Stones sound just freaking tired...no way around it. Not only is he needed hi role has to expand!!!!

I agree, only a few guitarists can shine if they have only 5 minutes to improvise on the same B-chord during a rock song for 20 times in a row.. And I doubt the Stones have time for Taylor to do something completely different.

I say put Ronny on base and Taylor back on lead. Ronny is an excellent base player!

It seems so crazy.... It's not like they're the tightest band anyhow. Let the guy play... The show's a beautiful spectacle, a guitar party, a freak show. The more freaks the better. Some days I think it's Jagger messing with this but today I think it's Richards and although he has earned every right to call the shots, it ain't right.

Ronnie's not interested plaus the bass player needs to keep track of where the band is in a song, not really Ronnie's strong point.

as said above..
"slippin away" was a great example of MT adding something new and interesting to a song. it made the song sound that little bit better for me.

I love the likes of CYHMK & MR (and wishful think for the full Sway outro solo) but its the interplay and possibilities 'slippin away' presents that i want more of. (o yeah the CYHMK from Gastonbury is easily the best live version too - band and MT locked in beautifully)

MORE MICK TAYLOR!!!!!!!!!!!

It was great to see MT, trip down memory lane, great days of music the early 70s for the band, old school, etc… But I could live with out him now. Stones are a two weaving guitar band to me. CYHMK was great live with out MT. This version goes nowhere-background music. For extra guitars, Going Down was a real treat and I do love to see MJ with one in his hands. MT noodling is time consuming distraction. Someone said its the notes that aren't played that are the most important.

It's not that I don't "get" the sentiment and desire of wanting Taylor to continue on and play a more significant role..
It's just that I find it offensive and disrespectful to be "demanding" or to think that anyone could possibly have more insight into the situation than the band and the individuals. It also appears, MT may have personal issues, but who here would know anything about that possibility??

It's not punitive for chrissakes..

It's a band and/or business decision. And if anyone has EARNED the right to, without question, run the greatest rock and roll band that has ever, and will ever, live... it's Jagger/Richards/Watts/Wood.

Period.

Keith invited Taylor on to play SA, without telling Mick. Just saying...

And had they played without the band structure (with Chuck) they probably wouldn't have had to rehearse that much. It would be hit and miss (like 81/82), but fore different reasons smiling smiley

Indeed, plus there is no way they would ask Darryl to "sit out" while Ronnie takes up the rhythm section with Charlie. And keep him away from the base too, we all know about his problems with that stuff. winking smiley

peace
