Gov't Mule to release a double LP of Stones covers
Posted by: Doc ()
Date: March 10, 2015 12:00

The band will release in Europe a 2-LP set including 13 of the 14 Stones songs they performed at the Tower Theatre on Halloween 2009.

Missing song will be Gimme Shelter
Sadly the tracklisting of the LPs isn't following the set list's real order.

A sample can be found here with the details :

These are older recordings remixed for this release. They were available from MuleTracks years ago and are quite excellent.

Got these recordings with high expectations: love the Mules and, well, the Stones ... What a big disappointment. Too heavy and not at all sexy. Not as lame as Phish, but close.

I also got these recordings from the Mule-homepage. They include other songs as well, not only Stones covers. Gimme Shelter is there. I also find the whole stuff pretty un-stonesy (...). Not bad, very different, more "beer and hard booze" than "Mary Jane", so to speak. Though I really like most GM music, I wouldn´t necessarily recommend those Stones sessions. Ok, Halloween means "under a scary mask"...
Cheers, Fillmore

What we really need is a Stones equivalent to The Art of McCartney!

they had a good sax player, and another guitarist as well (Jackie Greene) on those Gov't Mule Stones tracks...I think there was a percussion player too..?

The problem is that it is impossible to cover the Stones and to sound good (unless you are a pure genius but I cannot think of anyone).

People like Gov't Mule should know better.

when phish decided to do Exile they did a very respectful performance of it..

I reckon they qualify as genius, though..

but lots of folks have done fine covers of Stones tunes.

its certainly not impossible to sound good doing their songs, but that certain attitude is important.

some would be kind of silly to try to cover, Midnight Rambler comes to mind..

Mule cover Pink Floyd brilliantly.

Haven't heard any great GM Stones covers but I do like their fearless approach to performing covers in general. Here's one that I thought was pretty good, Traffic's "Empty Pages"

It's impossible if you're anal about covers and think a cover song should sound EXAÇTLY like the original, which is absolutely ridiculous. The Stones aren't some magical band that nobody can touch and every cover falls apart. The Stones are just a band, just like any other band.

The difficulty seems to be in whatever magic the Stones used to have. I always wondered why they didn't have more covers made of their songs and it's because everybody sounds ridiculous NOT being the Stones. Or worse, a ridiculous version of the Stones. Off the top of my head I think Devo's 'Satisfaction' only works because it's completely different, with no attachment to the original. Every body else sounds lame when they try to sound anywhere near the Stones. We're more invested in Stones' songs than Beatle songs in that way. I'm sure it's been a drag royalty wise for jagger/Richards. '

Beatle songs sounded good in a wide array of genres, whether it's 'Fool On The Hill' with a Brazilian touch by Sergio Mendes, or Wilson Pickett, with Duane Allman, roughing up 'Hey Jude'. I have not heard these Govt. Mule covers, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say they didn't do the songs in entirely novel ways, therefore they're going to be compared to the Stones, and come up lacking.

Yeah - just a band that no one else comes close to!

The best Stones Stones covers are usually done by the bar band down the street...

That's because the Stones kind of started that way themselves...The rest is history!
