Sweethearts Together
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Windmill Lane Recording Studios, Dublin, Ireland, November 3 - December 11, 1993
and Don Was’ Private Studio & A&M Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles,
California, US, January 15 - April 23, 1994

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmony vocals, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - pedal steel guitar, lap steel guitar
Chuck Leavell - B-3 organ
Flaco Jiminez - button accordion
Max Baca - bajo sexton
Luis Jardim - percussion
Bernard Fowler - backing vocals
Ivan Neville - backing vocals

Sweethearts together, we've only just begun
Sweethearts together, we'll take life as it comes
Sweethearts forever, two hearts together as one

Everybody needs someone to tell their troubles to
To share the pain and laughter in a world beset with fools
To help you with your ups and downs, someone to heal your wounds, so we're
Sweethearts together, when two hearts beat as one
Sweethearts together, we've only just begun
Sweethearts forever, two hearts together as one, as one

Everyone's so cynical and says that love won't last
Think about your future, stop living in the past
Time's not standing still, so stop looking through those tinted glasses
Sweethearts together, we've only just begun
Sweethearts together, so glad I've found someone
Sweethearts forever, two hearts together as one, as one

But love is never easy, it's never silky smooth
There's always something tempting in the wilderness of youth
But I will stay right by your side, the truth will out, you'll realise we're
Sweethearts together, we've only just begun
Sweethearts together, so glad I've found someone
Sweethearts forever, two hearts together as one, as one, as one, as one, as one
Sweethearts together, sweethearts together…

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Voodoo Lounge” 2LP

A nice attempt at something different. There really is some freshness to this track, and it's nice to hear (as on The Worst) Mick and Keith sharing the mic again.

Some good guitar interplay on Sweethearts as well.

Most unexpected song from Voodoo Lounge ?

Disposable fluff; I've got better things to do with my time than waste it on piffle like this.

Awful Keith tosh.......

Sorry but I'm with Drew on this one. Just a weak track that lacks conviction or anything to make it bear repeated listening. It sounds like a leftover from Primitive Cool so probably a Jagger solo efffort.

It sounds like they wanted to make it a Mexican love song but it lacks cojones.

For me, together with "Love Is Strong, the one and only really stand out song on VOODOO LOUNGE, even if there are good ones.

I fully admit it is a blind shot: But, somehow, I hear the song in its approach as one (and I believe the only on VOODOO LOUNGE) that could have featured on EMOTIONAL RESCUE. Preferably, among the first five songs there.

Love It!

Best tune on Voodoo Lounge (together with "Thru and Thru" and "Moon is Up")

I Love the relaxed feeling. It feels so authentic. More like the songs Keith use to sing.

A big difference compared to the otherwise pretentious and overworked ballads (Already over me, Out of Tears etc) from the post 83 era.

Beautiful song, i like it too much. Vocal harmonies as in the good old days. Keith and Mick sharing mics.

It's alright. One of the better moments on Voodoo Lounge, but that says more about the album than about the song. But I like it.

I am terribly sorry, but since it is a track talk, I have to post this.
Flaco Jiminez played at the time a lot with a band from Limburg, the most southern part
of The Netherlands. So he forms some kind of missing link between The Stones and this
band. I have to add that I am not liable for any damage that might come from listening
to the video below, which shows mister Jiminez with said band from Limburg.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Always loved it. Great minor track. Doo-wopey vocals and the great Flaco Jiminez! Nice throwback to their more pop-ish stuff in the 60's. Just something a little different.

Yes.

And for all the complaining that Voodoo Lounge is just rehashing old stones here is an example of them trying something a bit different.

It's not my go to song by any stretch but it does no harm and nice to add to a cd mix of summer songs you can enjoy by the pool.

This one, the irish-sounding The Worst, Moon Is Up, Thru And Thru and how they approached the blues Brand New Car all throw that statement to the (stone)ground...

At first, I didn't get the appeal of this song. But then, I accidentally came across it when it played as part of the soundtrack to a TV movie I watched together with my mother at one time during the mid-90s. I have loved the song ever since. There is a really uplifting quality to it. So relaxing.

I think I'd retch if I heard anyone else perform it, but when the Glimmer Twins are singing love songs to each other,
I'm always delighted, especially when they do it over such charming guitars :E

Silver D dear, since there's at least one Keith-LV demo in circulation,
I think it's not a leftover Jagger solo thing.

And René sweetie, you forgot the "chihuahuas" - I love that touch :E

Are there any Tex-mex-latino-caribbean-esque leftover material from Mick at all? winking smiley

It starts out like it's going to be a great tune but as soon as the singing comes in falls flat on it's face, imo. They are usually so good at distilling genres down to great Stones tunes but they totally missed on this one.

It sure ain't rock and roll, it's not convincing tex-mex or latino just a poor attempt at it. Stones-lite...it's songs like this that make me appreciate and understand why they play 40 year old hits in their concerts these days.

peace

OK, good point. I just assumed because of its blandness that it had to be Mick and not our good man Keith.

Sweethearts Together is a great song. I do not want to hear anymore discussion.

I hope they play the song on this tour.

We're going to the Concert!!

I fully agree that is not rock and roll. Not a few songs of their creation are other sorts of music, among them their takes on various types of ethnic music genres and using those to make what could be categorized as Rolling Stones music. Well, I see that you yourself refer approvingly to their grip on that approach, but obviously think that the band did not succeed with this song.

Possibly you will think likewise towards songs like "Indian Girl" or "Far Away Eyes"? Or maybe not?

Yes, I have always said this song screams for a Taylor solo. It is a rare Jagger song in that it has straightforward lyrics expressing straightforward emotions. No hiding behind vague and ambiguous lyrics here. The song would be saved with stronger musicianship.

Naw, they nailed it with Far Away Eyes and Indian Girl is a great song. Sweethearts Together could have been OK but the vocals and lyrics just don't stand up, awful chorus plus neither Mick nor Keith nor Ronnie can play this style on guitar very convincingly. That slide stuff by Ronnie just doesn't fit the tune or style.

If they are going to venture into other styles, fine, but they should accentuate the things that make those styles great, tongue in cheek if necessary. A clear example of why Don Was should not be allowed anywhere near the Stones.

peace
