When people saw this video, they thought there was no way in hell the Stones were gonna tour, and I was inclined to agree.

Some people blamed the fact that the guitar was slung way too low...I don't know. It's a painful video to watch either way...makes it all the more remarkable that the Stones reformed and launched a successful, back to basics tour where everyone sounded great.

BUT like I said, it makes the fact that they launched their 50th anniversary tour later in that year even more amazing. People really thought Keith was completely finished as a player after seeing this video.

Me Too! I was shocked and thought well now it's all clear why we didn't see Keith play guitar in public for years (since the ABB Tour 2007) and the Stones are finished understandably.
The more I was surprised at the first O2 show in London. He still could play!

Lame excuse. It's not like it's around his ankles. I seem to recall some also used the "Keith wasn't playing his guitar, he's never played that guitar before" excuse. Come on, the guy is a professional. I suppose if we had given Stevie Ray Vaughan a Les Paul to play he would have totally sucked too, right?

It was potentially painful in 2012, but just a sidebar today. Can't wait for Keith's solo outing!!

Well to be fair, Elvis plays/sings a rather stiff Chuck Berry too and it probably sounded a lot better standing out in front. Besides Keith hasn't been relegated to playing that much lead guitar in a long time. winking smiley peace

Okay, there are no drums, no bassline.

playing with only rhythm and acoustic guitar needs a special treatment of the material, only few musicians are very good at that (Ray Davies and his 2nd man).

It doesn't seem Keith's playing is going down too well with the song ... confused smiley

Seems to me like Keith wasn't familiar with the song, and and his chops weren't exactly great anyway, and he tried to noodle along but it didn't work out.

Didn't Elvis say that there were some trouble with the guitar Keith played?

It took me three years to get it, but I think Keith is making fun of Chuck Berry here, by imitating Chucks guitar playing abilities nowadays.winking smiley

I fully agree, no-one was more gobsmacked than me at seeing how well he played at that first O2 show later that year. Like a lot of other people, I really did think (based on that awful clip) that he was essentially finished. Goes to show how wrong we could all be, the guy never fails to amaze. All power to him ... and to the band as a whole.
