RIP mister Covay. Another great voice gone.
Would love to hear the Invitation outtake from Dirty Work here as a tribute. Vocals by Don Covay, Bobby Womack and Mick Jagger.

Very sad news and yes, a massive influence on Mick's vocal style and particularly his phrasing.

This is the classic first album that had all the UK would-be soul boy singers getting itchy.

RIP Don Covay.

8 years later he made another incredible album called Super Dude. Just burning soul that combines the fonky soul power of James Brown and the crying passion style of Al Green.

Musta been a stunner for Don when his idol Little Richard
covered his soul number -- I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me....

I am very sad Don passed away but this was predictable. He unfortunately had been suffering from a stroke for the past 20 years from which he never completely recovered. I worked for a label which reissued his album 'Different Strokes for Different Folks' on CD for the first time in 1994. I can only recommand warmly every Stones fan to listen to that guy : he was not only a major influence in Jagger's singing (1964 to 1976 - also in songwriting : compare I Was Checking Out She Was Checking [www.youtube.com] with Fool to Cry and just figure this out), but he was essential in funk and r&b really, takings risks his pairs would not take (one of the first to introduce slide guitar, etc); I built this site http://stones7.com/don_covay/ Don Covay worldwide discography for him last year (which he probably never was aware of), and for folks like you of course, and other youngsters; I hope some kids will dig it in the future; his music desserves it and his solo career was really underrated.
RIP Don, Lord have mercy on your soul. And thanks for all the fun(k).

Great site and that song "I Was Checking Out She Was Checking In" is really quite something, Mick/Fool To Cry indeed. Will listen to invitation in a minute as I'm not sure the Mick voice I was hearing was indeed him...Always thought the "You Don't Tell Me" part was Mick but maybe not, is Mick on Invitation at all ?!

Anyway RIP Don.

The next extremely sad loss for the music community and all Stones fans. Reminds me of Out of Our Heads - one of my favorite albums at all. Further there is another version of Mercy, Mercy that they recorded in the Chess Studios and that is even better than the version on Out of Our Heads.

I also always thought it was Mick on Inivitation too, but after listening for the first time in many years just now I don't think it's Mick!!!
Only Bobby Womack and Don Covay..... unbelievable...
I remember reading somewhere Bobby Womack and Don Covay were used as vocal-guidance for Mick during Dirty Work Sessions, because Mick often was not there. Maybe that's a reason.

Well I gave "Invitation" a close listen and after hearing how "similar" Mick's voice sometimes is to Don Covay's (found a few of his albums on Google Music, not "Super Dude" unfortunately) and I'm 99% positive the "You Don't Tell Me" part is indeed Don Covay and not Mick. Wish I'd looked up Don Covay in more detail earlier but better late than never. What a beautiful voice, as sweet as Curtis Mayfield's but deeper/richer, too bad he didn't reach his level of success in spite of being a great songwrite too, not in the right place at the right time I suppose.
