I ran into Sonoko many times over the years, not just at Stones shows, it seemed like whenever there was good music playing I would turn around and see her face. After a while, I was never surprised when I would run into her. We became friends.
One time after seeing Ginger Baker at the Iridium, we decided to try to go backstage and meet him after the show. I led the way and she followed closely behind me, hiding behind my back, afraid of catching the wrath of Ginger. When I politely asked Ginger for a picture, he said, "A picture?" and brushed us away with a dismissive flip of his hand and disgusted look on his face. We retreated out of the backstage area and were met by the club manager. Sonoko got an earful from her and was begged not to bother Ginger, afraid he would cancel the remaining shows. We always remembered and shared a nice laugh about this, and she told me,
"Oh Kiki, this is the best story I ever had of an encounter with a legend like Ginger Baker."
Adieu my friend. So enchanted to meet with you, and I will cherish those memories "pour toujours".
