Mark Knopfler himself was heavily influenced by JJ Cale.

maybe groove vise if i may say so, but as a total guitarplayer, knopfler was in different league (maybe 2 leagues above..) above mr Cale, with full respect for mr Cale which songs i like vey much. I would say Knopfler is in top 5 as guitarist, maybe not performer, and i dont undarstarnd why no one nominates him.

This thread is about who influenced who. What do the guitarists themselves say about that? What style or sound from one guitarist do you hear in the style or sound of another guitarist?
"influence" can be about influencing the listener as well, dont you think so ?

As always with threads like this, one guitarist is always left out, Mick Green. As I have posted before, Trouser Press did a two issue article in the late 70's of the 100 greatest guitarists. In the Mick Green's bio it was stated that Page, Townshend and Blackmore have all name checked him as an early influence or the reason they picked up the guitar. Yes, he did not play on the original version of Shakin' All Over, but he took it over and made it his own.

That's good. MarC Bolan should be on some people's lists too, at lest, I"d think.
