Since the question is "influential" and not necessarily best:

Muddy Waters
Chuck Berry
Scotty Moore
Steve Cropper
George Harrison and John Lennon
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
JIMI HENDRIX
Keith Richards and Mick Taylor
Jimmy Page
Steve Howe
Eddie Van Halen
Kurt Cobain

The Edge doesn't even come close, imo. Yes he has developed an interesting and successful style but you don't see many trying to copy it or hear of guitarists quoting him as an influence.

I'm surprised more haven't mentioned Steve Howe. For a time there before Van Halen came along he was pushing the limits more that anyone and his combination acoustic and electric work influenced American guitarists in a big way.

peace

Page 2 and no-ones mentioned Hank Marvin. Pretty much every single UK guitarist post 1960 was influenced by Hank in some way. Green, Beck, Page, Clapton, Harrison etc..He was the first truly great lead guitarist of the beat group era.

Finally, someone mentions Duane Eddy, Dick Dale, and Alvin Lee. There have been many brilliant, influential guitarists listed here, but in my opinion, these 3 must be included. Most of the guitarists listed developed their own unique style and that is definitely true for these 3 as well.

Eric Clapton was a huge influence for many guitar players in the 60's and 70's, and, of course Jeff Beck.

Very true about Howe. Another part I like about his solos kis that you one can "sing" them. they are strong. In prog dept. I d say that Steve Hackett from the 'real' Genesis was vefry advabced. He was tapping way before EVH; and had revolutionary sounds.

Even if one hates U2, and like a few others here - I don't get the venom that name automatically produces - the Edge pioneered a whole new qay of playing. yes - even he admits that it is effect based. But it is modern way of thinking; it is using technology to make new music and sounds. Like naturalust says, there are many guitarists who cite him as influence.

I guess that any lead guitatist who develop its own unique style (usually as part of a band) might be regarded as influential. Some very talented musicians did great things, but few that were new technically.

I think that these "type" of discussion s always tend to forget Roby Krieger who really had its own style in the typical musical blend of the Doors music. I am no musician but occasionally when I listen to new (for me) live Doors recordings I always say "wow now thats an interesting and unusual way of putting your lead guitar contribution to this song".

These are allways about your personal favorites,,no matter how you look at it.As they´re for me as well,,i think right way looking at this is put most influential from each era...because they all been influenced by someone and without that, you can´t make your own music,at all.

for me personally most important ones are

Tony Iommi
keith Richards
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Pete townsend
Richie Blackmore(early deep purple&Rainbow-dio era)

first of all, these are the guys who changed rock n roll forever,,took it completely another level,,in a way changed future of rock music, everything else came later..Tony Iommi.,,more so Black Sabbath created a complete genre,,which no other band has done from 70ies,,,not even zeppelin..

But in a nuttshell, these bands made what rock music is today...

2nd important coming was in around 1988-1992,,when metalllica and nirvana made it big...

like someone said:I play 3 buddy holly songs in a row,3rd one is mine winking smiley
