What is this book about? Does it contain valuable and previously unheard information about the band and the music or is it just full of "how I met Keith and presented him with my selfmade scarf"-stories? As I'm well behind my teenage years I'd like to know before I push the shopping-cart button...

It's obviously about the fans and the online RS fan community. Knowing that our esteemed author is a sociologist and pretty smart cookie with a history of exploring online connections and communities, it's a pretty good bet that this book will get fairly deep into motivations and identities of us fans from the fan sites.

Go to the amazon site and search the table of contents for a pretty good clue of the content. The fact that you are asking here instead of doing so already probably indicates you will learn something about yourself in this book. lol eye popping smiley

I hope it is full of "how I met Keith, Mick, Charlie, Ronnie etc.-Stories.
And "Does it contain valuable and previously unheard information about the band"
is one of the most dry sentence I read here for ages.
It´s the Stones honey, not science!!!

"Dry sentence"??? Jeeez, first and foremost, it's a valid question. No need to react so thin-skinned just because I don't share your obvious enthusiasm for VIP-gossip. "It's the Stones honey, not science!!!" - good Keith imitation, but that's exactly what I'm not interested in.

It's about online fan communities, from a sociologist's perspective, alimente.

Gazza is quoted on the back, btw.

And...it's here!!!

Did a very quick flip thru and was thrilled to find my story in there. Have no idea why I asked to use "Candy From Strangers" as my username, must have made sense at the time, but here's an image to go with the story...not terribly elegant but, as the story mentions, there wasn't a whole lot of time to pull it together.

Thanks Angee, it's gonna be a great read!

It's a great read, and a true labour of love! Really enjoyed it! I was (pleasantly) surprised that you covered sexuality, the sexual revolution and feminism and their relation to rock / Stones, and female fans. You got that right baby! Now - if everyone on this board doesn't immediately buy this book, I'm losing my touch. Pun intended. smiling smiley

Thanks for the additional noodge to write more about your book, Angee. As mentioned via email, this is a bit of a hectic time, but am so delighted to share my impressions of the heartfelt and well-written You Get What You Need with other iorrans.

I enjoyed You Get What You Need. The research is impressive--i.e., collecting a huge amount of "data" and personal stories through countless interviews, of a diverse bunch of people, culling out cohesive and interesting themes in Rolling Stones fandom, and presenting it all in a compelling book.

While Angee is an academic, the book's prose reads easily and is warm in tone. A nice mixture of scholarship and everyday appeal -- no easy feat to accomplish. It effectively mixes in Angee's own experiences and take on being a Stones' fan, which adds a personal dimension. I enjoyed "hearing" people describe their relationships to/with the Stones, including their first exposure to them and when they converted to fandom, accounts of concerts, meaningful songs, as well as Angee's chronicling of the various message boards.

I'm pleased to own You Get What You Need, happy that Angee conducted this research and summarized the Stones phenomena so ably in her book, and to have it among the other other books in my Rolling Stones collection.
