It's been 50 years since Sam Cooke died. For those who are interested, here is a link to a BBC 2 documentary about one the best voices soul, gospel and music in general ever knew. Sam Cooke - Don't Fight It, Feel It Thanks Sam...

If you like Sam (and who doesn't?), you'll love his brother L.C. Cooke's "new" album, with liner notes by Peter Guralnick. Abkco is basically giving it away on Amazon. A great gift idea:

The best soul singer of all time! ABKCO hybrid SACD Portrait of a Legend is awesome. Live at the Harlem Square is one of my favorite live albums.
So many of his song's have been covered by other artists over the years: You Send Me, Cupid, Only Sixteen, Chain Gang, Wonderful World, Another Saturday Night, Having A Party, Twisting The Night AWay, etc. I think of all cover versions, I like Bring It On Home To Me by the Animals the most thanks to Eric Burdon's vocals and Alan Price's piano. Stones cover Good Times on Out of our Heads. Sam recorded the song at RCA Studios several months before the Stones did it. Dave Hassinger was the engineer on both so I"ve always wondered if he influenced the Stones to record it?

Is he the same Cooke as Sam Cooke?

Many thanks for posting the link. I really enjoyed the radio show. He's my favorite singer.
I have a cd called The Man and His Music. The liner notes have a bunch of quotes from other musicians. Most of them are standard and predictable praise but I get a kick out of the Keith Richards quote. To paraphrase, Keith's quote is that eventually all singers have to measure themselves against Sam Cooke...and that most of them give up and go back to pumping gas for a living.

Here is a great song. I am not sure the weary singer really believes change is gonna come, but he has too much dignity to give up.

Here´s an article about his sad demise. It´s taken from Mojo 1995, sorry for the bad quality.

Well, some cooks can cook the same as Sam Cooke, but can Sam Cooke cook the same as some cooks?

Sam Cooke cooks like any other Cooke. As long as there are not too many cooks, cause you know what happens then.

ABKCO have been talking about doing a biopic of Cooke's life for a long time.
Of course the late Allen Klein was involved in some of various business dealings towards the end of Sam's life.
Say no more.

Actually, good quality and I happen to have the "You send me" book by Woolf, what this article quotes some. I didn't realize there was a real picture of the scene, isn't that sad.

Thanks for this. I've stumbled on some Sam Cooke murder articles on the web.

[diaryofahollywoodstreetking.com]

[en.wikipedia.org] Wikipedia article.

The experts don't seem to say the mob did it as one of the above articles I post says or that may have actually been a youtube video. Curious matter.

I don't want to get into the gore of the incident but poor Sam was all beat up. In that, probably more than you would expect a woman to be able to do. I will have to reread some of this.

I think "Same Cooke" would be a great name for a Sam Cooke tribute artist.

Yes, but just relocate the 'e', instead of adding it.

Same Cook.

Actually, they added an "e" for showbiz it looks like. From earlier, I guess I learned to try to get facts straight.

Sam Cooke:

Born January 22, 1931

Clarksdale is a town in the Mississippi Delta, a historical home of Delta blues music.

Although, this painting delves a bit into the unsavory chapter of the death of Sam Cooke; the illustration has some talent.

The album could be named "Too Many Cookes"...

Or "A Cooke surrounded by a "Little" Crook" ..............this is kind of a rebus

Every day I'm inspired to improve the world by even the tiniest of contributions.

Unfortunately, I seem to have limited myself to the tiniest of contributions.
