OT: The best 2014 albums
Posted by: franzk ()
Date: November 25, 2014 20:54

OK, we're slowly approaching the end of this year so maybe it would be cool to make a list of our favourite albums released this year. There are still some albums to come (AC/DC, Smashing Pumpkins) but I think that we can start forming our lists now. Maybe at the end of December we will count our votes to find the favorite IORR album of 2014 winking smiley . So my selection is:

Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways
Jack White - Lazaretto
Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes
Mastodon - Once More Round The Sun
The Black Keys - Turn Blue
Die Antwoord - Donker Mag

How different tastes can be.
After buying all and everything Mastodon did for many years and seeing them 5 times I was very disappointed with their latest effort. It lost its energy and its too much of a stoner rock thing now.
Black Keys, same story. I saw them 3 times. Brothers was their best effort. Unfortunately after that they stopped growing.

My vote for album of the year : Behemoth - The Satanist.

What...! Nobody has named U2's Songs of Innocence, the iTunes album of the year, as best? Of course, I delteted it a.s.a.p., from my phone, but...hey, they're a (or were a) popular group. I didn't know folks still bought albums anymore. Anyway, album(s) of the year for moi would have to be The Beatles in mono simply for the sonic revelations. I also dug Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers's Hypnotic Eye for being a real rock'n'roll album.

Oh, man...The Satanist is INCREDIBLE. What a black/death metal masterpiece.

I dig the new Mastodon - I like the stoner vibe and more mellow vocals. It suits them well.

I'll go with (no particular order):

Exodus - Blood In Blood Out
AC/DC - Rock Or Bust
Opeth - Pale Communion
Tom Petty and the 'Breakers - Hypnotic Eye
Judas Priest - Redeemer of Souls
Behemoth - The Satanist
Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways
Mastodon - Once More Round the Sun
Cannibal Corpse - A Skeletal Domain
Springsteen - High Hopes
Robert Plant - Lullaby and The Ceaseless Roar
Floyd - Endless River

Frankly it's been a fairly average year for new releases.

I LOVE Springsteen.....I had High Hopes for HH....it is patchy, not a best by a mile.

In the end I think I have to give the nod to either

Ryan Adams self titled new one - a bit louder than his norm, a bit grungier...a BIT...or

Lucinda Willams' Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone. Great southern rock

I loved Tom Petty's Hypnotic Eye when first released but the shine quickly wore off and I DO love about half of Paolo Nutini's Caustic Love record, but ONLY a half. The good half is simply great, but it's interspersed with a half a record's worth of dross. I don't know who produced this, but someone needed to have grabbed him when he was going off the rails and say "Hey Paolo, remember that track we did yesterday? THAT was great...THIS is not!" and keep him focused.

Biggest disappointment by the proverbial mile is Pink Floyd's new album, and U2's..and NOT having a new (NEW) album by the Stones

Glad to see all the comments on Lucinda Williams Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone. Truly top notch - arguably her best effort to date. Some very cool songs on that double disc - especially the first one.
I'm loving the new Bryan Ferry Avonmore - the title track in particular is killer.
The 'new' Pink Floyd was disappointing to these ears on the 1st couple of listens (I found the lack of vocals a real issue) - but wouldn't you know, it's growing on me!
And finally, the just released Bowie set Nothing Has Changed sounds amazing. If you say 'I have all this', guess again - you probably don't. Not in this quality anyway. I didn't think it possible to hear songs I've heard a million times before and still get excited, but it really is a great collection (go for the 3CDs - only like $20).
And while I wanted to love the new U2 - I just don't - and I've been a fan since the start. 3 or 4 solid songs - the rest sounds to me like they are trying to be Coldplay (rather than the other way around). People here have said it sounds better on disc than what came free in iTunes - sadly, I haven't been interested enough to bother.

Really? I thought it was without a doubt, the worst thing The Pixies have ever done.
