But it isn't a universal truth that there is a strong similary between those versions. The live version is more wonky, imo.

The slide guitar sounds like it's being played by a different guitarist. The second guitar is low in the mix on the studio version, hence not disguising the quality of the main guitar.

Listen closer, the notes on the louder guitar are being fretted without a slide.

The part is some what similar to parts of Brian's 12 string GOOMC part.

In the thread Doxa linked to, and which I will now try to make a bit clearer, I tried to scretch the way Mick Jagger's was influenced by literature in those days and used these influences to equal or surpass (which I think he does in these songs) Dylan (SFTD) or Velvet (SCB ). It is interesting that some of the "tools" to do this stem from high literature/avantgarde SFTD (Milton, romantics and Bulgakov), SCB (the fairy tale Goldilock, maybe with a Finnegans wakean grasp of it - Jagger read Finnegans Wake by Joyce in those days (Joyce makes a pun upon Little red riding hood; A rude hiding rod!)) - and on EOMS a few years later Jagger uses William Burroughs Cut-up-method.

SCB is some fairytale.

I love Stray Cat Blues, it's always been in my Top Ten of Stones tracks. The whole Beggars Banquet album was a much needed antidote to the almost unmitigated dross of the previous year's 'Satanic Majesties' album, notable only for one track, 2,000 Light Years from Home, in my opinion.

Stray Cat Blues is the Stones at their raunchy blues and rock-based best, firing on all cylinders as if their lives depended on it. It probably did, after the relative failures of 'Satanic' and 'Buttons', they needed to kick start their careers again. It was a stunning return to form that ushered in the new 'greatest rock n roll band in the world' era and said goodbye to trippy psychedelia, which never really suited the Stones. Restored my faith in them, anyway.

I have a great Russian CD bootleg version of 'Banquet', which features the original mono mix of Jumping Jack Flash straight after Salt of the Earth as one of 7 bonus tracks. It would have made the perfect climax to the original album, in my view. I have two so one will be on ebay.co.uk in the next couple of days.

This song is all Keith to me, nasty and raw, leading the way out of the peace and love of the sixties and into the dark and wild 70's. Keith probably has more tracks on this tune that anybody else by a factor of three. This tune sounds like what I imagine a speedball would feel like.
