Holy crap I had to jump on turning the volume down on this one...

Side note - Ronnie had about 22% consistency with his soloing for Start Me Up for 1989-90. Which is really screwed up.

Start me up is one of the few Stones songs I like them to re-record. It's a great, iconic rock tune, but the studio version is kinda weak compared to the rock song it is live. It needs louder guitars and more energy.

Are you kidding? They never managed to create the magic of the studio version in concert grinning smiley

agreed. It's like She's So Cold and Rocks Off.

Those songs are studio masterpieces.

Totally!

I'd add Shattered to this list of "studio masterpieces never replicated live" as well.

Unlike Rocks Off and She's So Cold, Shattered was figured out live to be better in a way that worked.

Not replicated... improved upon differently.

Not the exact one I was looking for but it works: click on 'more' and go to

13:26 Shattered

Thanks GLS for sharing this link. I must admit that this is perhaps the best live version of Shattered I've so far heard.

i remember last year that people were pretty impressed with this version from austin

and i got to admit i didn't hear it at first but the pace and speed of this version is about perfect even if there are technically better performances

That's oddly awesome. Steve holds that 4 beat down solid. Keith is solid. Ronnie, well... Darryl throws in a little reggae run but what the hell is Matt Clifford even doing on stage!!??

One thing weird or off about it is Mick saying You you as in yew, or the letter, as opposed to the You you that borders on yo. That started during the LICKS tour.

I'd ask for a refund if SMU wasn't played at a Stones show.
A perfect combination of Rock AND Roll.
It's also so important to get the tempo right or it falters.
Steve Jordan injected new life into this song.
Keith found the right crunch of that anthemic riff again.
It's open G heroin for your ears.

I don't think Steve Jordan "injected new life into the song". I would prefer Watts on this song any day. SMU is a beaten up warhorse by now. Simply boring. I wouldn't mind if they left it out.
Still like the song though. The original studio version that is.

I would prefer Watts as well. I'm listening to SMU from the Wiltern show in 2002. Amazing. In 2017 and 2018, I wasn't the only person to notice that the tempo of some songs were becoming painfully slow.
Steve Jordan, being able to speed up the tempo on some songs, rejuvenated the performances from Mick, Keith and Ronnie.
As I discovered the Stones in 81 as a teenager, I'd be beyond disappointed if I didn't hear SMU during a concert.

I found the acoustic Start Me Up, and can confirm that Mathijs was right. It sounds like there are two guitars there in a couple of places, but I'm not sure. Keith is pretty active on the fretboard, so it's probably only one guitar. He is indeed showing someone the track, and talks about it before and after.

Keith is playing it in standard tuning. Will upload it as soon as I can.

That's the one! Although I remember the version I have only to be a minute long or so...

Is that one or two acoustic guitars?

<Is that one or two acoustic guitars?>

I'm not sure yet. Sounds a bit like there are two in a couple of sequences there.

1977. There are a couple of passages in there where it sounds like two guitars, don't you think?

1977, wow, with Keith's husky slurry voice, I'd have put it in the 90s or later. His playing is a bit sloppy, which I dont recall <1990. Also the patterns he plays on the higher strings resembles stuff he did in later times.

Don't think it sounds like 2 guitars, he fills up the sound, keeping it droning while playing more melodical stuff on the high strings.

Put on any 1977 interview and his voice is pretty husky.

This is the Never Stop riff that he is playing. I haven't heard him play that after the 70s. And the track is on a boot called 'Pathe Marconi Alternate versions 1977/1978'.

Really nice piece, he had it all down in 1977 then, nice melodies on the main riff at the 2 minute restart.

can you post or point me to this boot because this is completely new to me

i was under the impression that the electric version of never stop was the only early version of smu in circulation

in my opinion that's definitely keith's speaking voice from the 70's (perhaps under the influence of something too) by the 90's his speaking voice was deeper and more raspy

also i'm just gonna throw this out there but could this have come from the honeymoon tapes in 1983?

He's talk8ng about the song like it's brand new, saying it needs drums etc.

My email isn't hidden, Professor.

He says:

"...really need a drummer, we've always done it with drums, never did it sitting around"

Which alludes to the song having been played often (always).

or he could mean it's something that they've been playing in the studio for years with drums

if this is from 77 then that would mean they've been messing around with this idea since about 75 so several years and many different takes

can anyone really clarify where/when/and why this was done?

I thought this would remind me even more of "Thunder Island" but it starts to sound a lot more like "Misty Roads" / "The Way She Held Me Tight."

Keith's 5 string tuning isn't on as much as you think.

This acoustic version is 6 string standard.
