My other favorite band is Steely Dan. They didn't tour much back in the day, just releasing some classic studio albums. They've toured quite a bit in the last twenty years, since Donald Fagen and Walter Becker reunited.
I saw them twice in concert in the last week or two. The video is shaky because the person who recorded this did not watch through the viewfinder (which was darkened covered so it wouldn't be distracting)... preferred to watch the real thing.
I've always liked them. Totally different style of music from the Rolling Stones, of course. And a different class of musicianship. (Except Charlie perhaps; and Daryl who doesn't really count.)
SD's drummer this time out is amazing... Keith Carlock. So is their other guitarist, Jon Herrington.

I was listening to the Doors 'L.A. Woman' album the other day and it reminded me how ahead of their time music wise they were. The Doors were Steely Dan before Steely Dan. All the elements of jazz rock were there by the time of 1968's, 'The Soft Parade'. The only difference was Steely Dan added this almost innocuous sounding vocals that hid sometimes perverse meanings. I love Steely Dan, but I sometimes think people didn't take the Doors seriously enough.
For a couple of years I've been discovering the norwegian band, Motorpsycho. They've been playing for 25 years, and have released 25 albums + EPs and other weird releases.
If the Stones take many directions with their music, Motorpsycho is totally unpredictable. You never know if you'll get a hard rocker, an orchestrated suite or a country song.
I've been having the time of my life collecting their albums (which can be hard work, mind you), discovering their musical universe.
Here are a few songs, to show their musical variety:

Is this a thread about our other favorite bands, or about Steely Dan? I like SD, but if it's the former, my other favorites for years have been the White Stripes (and now Jack White solo) and Zeppelin.
Black Crowes, Ryan Adams, Gov't Mule, Drive by Truckers, Lucinda Williams, Jack White, Allman Brothers and The Who. Not in activity :I was a huge fan of Led Zep, Willy Deville and Kinks among the others
Quite lately I became a bit tired of my RS playlist, as it happens from time to time. The Who never found their way out of the playlist, but the doors did.
I searched for a download of “Absolutely live” as I was away from home and from my vinyl copy of AL, including all the “bumps” of the record (scratches) which I learned to regard as an integral park of the song.
Just for the curiosity I looked for what other downloads of the doors live I could find: obviously I knew ASC and live at the Hollywood Bowl + bootlegs, but was out of the circle since the late 90’s.
It was then that I came across the whole line of live recordings they released since 2001. GOD what a great pleasure I have had since that moment, a few weeks ago. The wet dream of any fan, Rolling Stones or whatever. Excellent recordings and no overdubs. And DAMN they were good. Indeed learned to appreciate how much ahead of their time they were (as already noted here) – and what a perfect unit, musically, the trio of the instrument players they were. Recalled how I saw Mazareck not too long before he passed away (with RK in a gig). Such a nice fellow, but his playing was unique and responsible to so much of the trade mark of the doors.
There always seemed to be a bit of competition (maybe only in my head) between the two bands in the 70s into the early 80s. The Stones touring every 3 years and The Who seeming to tour on years the Stones were off. The Who were often deeper the than Stones. The Stones somewhat more 'bad boys'. Loved the Stones records, but they only started coming close to The Who live in 1981/82 as The Who seemed tired by 1982. Now both are tired, but have a great legacy that I still enjoy....and I am searching for new bands to enjoy.
Or, since I can't possibly get it down to a small number, how about "My other favorite bands are ________"
