After listening to Just 14, I think it's clearly Keith on slide. Anybody confirm?

Meet Mr Blue sure sounds stonesy to me (Yah, yah, yah), but is less reliant on Keith than I remembered. Also - damn those strings! But marvellous piano - Hopkins?

Remember that Taylor was a complete mess from addiction to drugs and far too much drink. I believe that was a contributing factor to leaving the band.

Still 'Off-Topic'

It's Keith doing lead licks on Wilderness of Love, isn't it?

Not picking a fight here, KSIE, but I'd say it's not folk-rock, I'd say it leans towards country. Which is firm Keith (and Stones) territory.

I think the slide on Just 14 IS Keith - and that's a very sloppy, druggy Stones' groove. The open rhythm guitars on Zulu are pure Keith - combined with Mr Taylor's "Stones'-era" type lead, (cf Jiving Sister Fanny). That's a rocker, for sure. Mr Blue has a Stones' tempo - but a soft-rock production.

Shine A Light is clearly about Brian if you read the lyrics!!! "Berber jewellry danglin down the street, Making bloodshot eyes at every woman that you meet....angels beating all their wings in time...thought I heard one cry for you."

Another thing Mathijs re Honky Tonk Women: Brian's father would have no reason to make it up that Brian played it for him & told him it was a song he's working on. The Stones, on the other hand, have proved themselves to be dishonest about giving credit where it's due, and may have a reason for saying Mick & Keith are the ones who wrote it.

(sorry to the rest of you for off topic, been off the board a while since the last Brian discussion).

I remember driving to work in early '75 and the dj (it was either KMET or KLOS) announcing that he had the new single by Jack Bruce and Mick Taylor. He played it. (Wasn't real memorable, and I can't recall the name) Never heard it again.

Also:

(for all you collectors out there)

The 45 version of "Leather Jacket" is a different mix than the album version found on "Mick Taylor"

Great stuff, thanks. (I didn't have the original).

So, Ron on bass?

Interesting to see Spedding in there. He played with Jack Bruce too, before and after Taylor.

That solo on Zulu is a testament to Taylor's biting rock brilliance. Makes you want to leap out of your skin.

the liner notes include some great photos, too (ahem, as has already been noted, sorry!). i found it for like $3 on amazon.

yes taylor's rock brilliance - even though he only put out 2 great solo records
his studio collaboartions are very good work - check out Taylor's studio solo
work on Murders Crow with Joe Henry - Taylor plays on 6 songs and has glistening
leads and swooping and melodic slide work.Chuck leavel even plays on the record
the current stones band director.

Thanks also for this article which I read at the time. I still hope Taylor could line up for some British concerts with Bill. Mick and Keith should never forget the debt owed to this 2 men.

Miss U,

I don't think that there is a re-released JB/MT cd.

There is a quite recent release of a 1975 live performance in Manchester, England.
I can't remember its title - but it'll be still available, to order, at a record store. It's not that wonderful. Agree about Keep It Down.

sssoul,

I've just ordered the original off amazon too. There are loads of copies there - dead cheap. Looking forward to the pics.

I'll email you Miss U - I have it at home, it came out (for the first time) a couple years ago when several of Bruce's post-Cream solo albums were reissued, under Bruce's supervision...
