Some Girls
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Pathé Marconi Studios (EMI Studios), Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, France,
October 10 - December 21, 1977

Mick Jagger - vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - synthesizer
Ron Wood - acoustic guitar, electric guitar
Sugar Blue - harmonica

Some girls give me money, some girls buy me clothes
Some girls give me jewelry that I never thought I'd own
Some girls give me diamonds, some girls, heart attacks
Some girls I give all my bread to, I don't ever want it back

Some girls give me jewelry, others buy me clothes
Some girls give me children, I never asked them for

So give me all your money, give me all your gold
I'll buy you a house back in Zuma Beach and give you half of what I own
Some girls take my money, some girls take my clothes
Some girls get the shirt off my back and leave me with a lethal dose

Yeah, French girls they want Cartier, Italian girls want cars
American girls want everything in the world you can possibly imagine
English girls they're so prissy, I can't stand them on the telephone
Sometimes I take the receiver off the hook, I don't want them to ever call at all
White girls, they're pretty funny, sometimes they drive me mad
Black girls just wanna get @#$%& all night, I just don't have that much jam
Chinese girls are so gentle, they're really such a tease
You never know quite what they're cookin' inside those silky sleeves
Give me all you money, give me all your gold
I'll buy you a house back in Zuma Beach and give you half of what I own
Yeah baby, why don’t you please come home?

Some girls they're so pure, some girls so corrupt
Some girls give me children, I only made love to her once
Give me half your money, give me half your car
Give me half of everything, I'll make you the world's biggest star by half
So gimme all your money, give me all your gold
Let's go back to Zuma Beach, I'll give you half of everything I own

Produced by The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Some Girls” LP
(Rolling Stones Records CUN 39108) UK, June 9, 1978

Feels like listening to my own summer, at one Point you can't even separate them, the only trick is to be with different ethnics, hence the tune.....

A defiant poke in the eye to the forces of political correctness that were gathering steam in the 1970s; calculated and brilliant.

The “Shine A Light” version is a hoot. And legend has it there is a 24-minute outtake that has yet to see the light of day.

Love it! Mick at his best. Some very nice guitar playing in there by Ronnie and Keith. Mick on open G.

Great, funny and political very incorrect songsmiling smiley) love it! i wonder, why they didn´t play it live very often (as far as I know first in the 9oies). The “Shine A Light” version is great, as Drew already stated.

Maybe because of that political incorrectness? And when they finally played it, they altered the lyrics smiling smiley

Fabulous song...... Probably because of the lyrics, I couldn't stop playing it when I bought Some Girls all those years ago.....

Its a hard choice, but it is possibly my favourite song on that album.

What a drag it is gettin' old

Among other changes at the Beacon he sang: "Some girls I give all my love to - I don't ever get it back"
He sounded so wounded - the poor Mick!

I love the Rolling Stones

The 6 min. long bootleg version has one more verse :

Gimme all your money, give me all your gold
I don't want your mother, she's too god damn old
Some girls give me children, other girls buy me clothes
Some girls give me children, I never asked them for

It's such an amazing track, clearly the best on the album. Musically, just wow! The interplay of the guitars and harmonica just reach out & grab you. I understand the lyrics aren't for everybody, but I've always found them interesting and funny.

One of the songs which are essential for the profile of the band. My favorite besides Beast of Burden from Some Girls. It is a blues, loud and proud, without any gender correctness ... guitars, guitars, guitars, Stones at their best.

For me there to be a distinction, the outright great songs on SOME GIRLS are in the order they feature: "Miss You", "Faraway Eyes", and "Shattered". Then the very good songs, in opposite order to the way they are included, are "Beast of Burden" and "Some Girls", whereas I also do like "Lies", whether it is very good, too, or "only" good.

I have no objections to the "correctness" of this song as to almost any song by the Rolling Stones.

This reminds me of the song Let It Bleed in it's richness...I often find that both these title tracks end up being my favourite songs on the album.

It's interesting that they did not play this track on the SOME GIRLS tour (the only other track to not get played was Before They Make Me Run). Then again, they played Satisfaction at the last show of the tour, no SFTD or silly old songs.

Great song.

Love the song. Didn't seem to translate real well when I heard it live in D.C

Great song. I love it. Somewhere I saw Mick say he was spoofing the Beach Boys' California Girls.

Bob Dylan had just lost his Zuma Beach house in a divorce when Mick wrote it.

I saw the Stones at "the Pond" in Anaheim for the No Security Tour and had a side seat above the stage. From my seat I could see that Mick sang every song from memory except for Some Girls for which he used a teleprompter. The tabloids were filled with the news of Luciana Gimenez being pregnant with Mick's kid. So the Stones (I think) obviously inserted Some Girls into the setlist at the last minute to match the headlines, recently enough that Mick hadn't had a chance to memorize the lines yet. "Some girls give me children..." I was thrilled they played it.

Just like for the same show they played Route 66 for the first time on that tour because the composer Bobby Troup had just died. Mick didn't need a teleprompter for that. I don't think they had one on the B-stage, anyway, where they played it.

When that first flanged chord comes in you know immediately that you are in for something special. And when the harmonica follows soon after it's obvious that are we back at Stones Central and in for a treat.

At first the song sounds deceptively simple and lolls along as Jagger takes us on a sleaze fest of conquests - imagined or real, who knows - giving us his most outrageously misogynistic lyric since Stupid Girl back in the 60s.

But there's a brilliant underlying synthesizer part by Bill Wyman on the chorus that meshes perfectly with Ronnie's acoustic guitar and gives the song an almost French chanson feel. If you've never detected it go back and listen to it as it really strengthens the whole chorus. Hats off to Billy Wyman.

Very well put, Mike!

But I hear two acoustics, and the way they are played gel perfectly with Bill's synth thumbs up

Shouldn´t it read:

Some girls give me children, I only made love to ´em once
Give me half your money, give me half your car
Give me half of everything, I'll make you the world's biggest star for half

This is a strange one for me. Like "Just My Imagination," I much prefer the track live to the studio version. Sure, I'd prefer to hear the original lyrics live, but you can't have everything. As it stands, the Jesse Jackson anecdote is the best thing that came of it. Well, that and Garrett Morris' plea on SNL that he wanted to meet the black women Mick knew.

Incidentally, I've always wondered if the line about the "you may be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on a stage / money, drugs at your command / women in a cage" in Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" the following year was Dylan getting back for the Zuma Beach dig.

On the topic, I suspect Mick cited Bob's divorce because Marvin Mitchelson represented Sara Dylan, Marsha Hunt, and Bianca in rapid succession.

Surely it's "By half"?

Definitely the best track off the SG record! The Sugar Blue harmonica riff that starts the tune and the record really makes it stand out....just superb. I like the lyrics, the arrangement and the instrumentation, altogether just great.

It may be the last Stones tune where I actually liked the way MJ sang it.......peace
