On the second night of the current Tokyo shows, Bob and the band played Truckin’, the Grateful Dead cover. Seemingly the first ever public performance of the song by him, it is causing a tremendous sensation among Dylan fans around the world now.

Err…no, I wasn’t there.

Thank you for your reviews from the Osaka concerts.

Here's an audio recording of "Truckin'":

On the Friday show in Tokyo, Dylan picked another Dead cover and first ever live outing, Brokedown Palace. He then segued into Melancholy Mood, a Sinatra cover, which wasn’t played on the European tour Fall 2022.

Osaka show report from SPIN website:

Tonight Bob will play the fourth Tokyo show at the recently opened Garden Theater while at the Budokan Eric Clapton will commence his six-night residency. Turning your eyes to a smaller venue, Blue Note Tokyo will host the second of the four nights of Bill Evans & Robben Ford "Blues, Miles & Beyond" featuring Darrel Jones & Keith Carlock.

A night of clash, really.

I just wanna say - How lucky are we to have Bob fckng Dylan still out there making music?!!

Haven’t seen him in years, 70s Blood on the Tracks and Desire? era and then with Tom Petty, so it’s been decades really. I gotta catch him again soon, to be honest I don’t really give a shit what it sounds like.

reports on Expectingrain say that he fuc*ed up 'Brokedonw Palace', said somethibg like 'I should know that song', aborted the song and played 'Melancholy Mood' instead

from a review on Boblinks:
'The song started very quietly, and it was far from instantly recognisable.
Bob was searching for the rhythm of the song and the band closed in around
him, it was beautiful to watch and to experience but the audio won't do it
justice. I guess you just had to be there. They seemed to lose the song at
the end. Bob Tony and Donnie conferred, Tony removed his bass and picked
up his stand up bass, Bob said with a smile something like " Sorry about
that, I thought I knew that song" before effortlessly launching into a
surprising " Melancholy mood".'

I second that - absolutely terrifying...looks like the doofus in the orange t-shirt might even dislocate a shoulder. Hopefully there was a med crew on standby.

Saw Dylan in Nagoya tonight, the final date of his Japan tour 2023. My third attendance on the itinerary, after Osaka night #1 (the tour opener) and #2.

The musical sophistication has reached an absolute peak at this show. A miraculous achievement.
Adding to the second performance of Truckin’ following Tokyo night #2, Dylan and the band introduced yet another first ever public outing of Only A River, a Bob Weir cover. Dylan going Dead.

What would have been an ultimate Dylan experience for me was, though, marred by a young Western woman in my adjacent section who was so hyper and overreacting while most of the audience were sitting and indulging in the music delivered.

To quote the album title of another seasoned music performer who plays Japan now, “there’s one in every crowd.”

Sorry to hear that. Some people are so selfish. Dylan is awesome on this tour. At The Ryman (Nashville), he and his band were elite.

If they release a live album from this tour, I'm buying it. Hoping they make a concert film of this tour, too.
