Drummer David Kemper on His Years With Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia

In April 1998, Bob Dylan and his band headed down to South America to open up for the Rolling Stones at soccer stadiums. On the final night of the run, Charlie Watts was walking through a backstage hallway when he came across Dylan’s drummer, David Kemper. “Charlie stopped and put his nose next to mine,” Kemper tells Rolling Stone. “Then he goes, ‘Nobody told you, did they?'”

Kemper had no idea what he was talking about, so Watts asked if they could go talk in a quiet place. “We found a dressing room and he told me he’d been watching me every night from a folding chair on the side of the stage,” says Kemper. ” He said, ‘You’re a real drummer. Where you put the two and the four is perfect. It’s not late, and it’s never early. None of your bars ever slow down, and I just love how you interact with the other musicians. You’re not a jazz drummer, but you’re an American drummer, one of the best I’ve ever seen.”

Just read the David Kemper article.
Great read!
Saw him perform many times with Jerry Garcia Band and Dylan.
Charlie knew talent when he saw it.

Funny Kemper got laurels from Charlie... Imho he was a very boring robotic time-keeper.
Those who drummed for Bob before him (Winston Watson) or after (George Receli) were far more inventive and exciting, and they had the swing.

For sure the 2000 Euro tour was sublime, but so was the 1995 trek... or the 2002 one with Keltner (who did not rehearse one minute with Bob's band before he started the 1st gig). spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Yes he's playing my town , so I'm going . Never thought I'd see him again . Saw him in the 80s with Taylor and Tom Petty line ups , which were excellent and in 1990 with GE Smith , 95 with Ronnie, in 98 , 2000 and for the last time in 2002 . I grew tired of his latter day delivery and lack of guitar playing , but he's playing the 3000 seat Bonus Arena in Hull , so it was a no brainer really.

only three shows for me this time around (3x Berlin)

first year since 1995 that I saw more Stones than Dylan shows (unless he offers some real cool changes in his setlist… in that unlikely case I going to go to more shows)

I'll be at the first Glasgow show plus the last gig of the tour in Dublin.

Oslo setlist was identical to the final show of the last US leg in Denver.

What is the meaning of this post?

This man is not even Charlie Sexton, at least not the guitarist Charlie Sexton who played in Dylan's band for many years.

And the "meaning" of this post is a reference to the song called "Beat's So Lonely" recorded many years ago by Dylan's Charlie Sexton. This Charlie Sexton looks to be a cop, and here in America police often "walk a beat" while on patrol in cities. So it's a play on words. Just to be clear here.

Tough crowd.

I saw on the Expecting Rain site today that it has been 30 years since the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert.

Yikes.

That makes my head hurt.
