Dylan's Black Rider: About Keith?
Posted by: Keefy ()
Date: December 4, 2020 19:50

So have ya'll heard Black Rider on Dylans latest? I think it might be about Keith.
Here are the lyrics: Black rider, black rider, you've been living too hard
Been up all night, have to stay on your guard
The path that you're walking, too narrow to walk
Every step of the way, another stumbling block
The road that you're on, same road that you know
Just not the same as it was a minute ago
Black rider, black rider, you've seen it all
You've seen the great world and you've seen the small
You fell into the fire and you're eating the flame
Better seal up your lips if you wanna stay in the game
Be reasonable, mister, be honest, be fair
Let all of your earthly thoughts be a prayer
Black rider, black rider, all dressed in black
I'm walking away, you try to make me look back
My heart is at rest, I'd like to keep it that way
I don't wanna fight, at least not today
Go home to your wife, stop visiting mine
One of these days, I'll forget to be kind
Black rider, black rider, tell me when, tell me how
If there ever was a time, then let it be now
Let me go through, open the door
My soul is distressed, my mind is at war
Don't hug me, don't flatter me, don't turn on the charm
I'll take a sword and hack off your arm
Black rider, black rider, hold it right there
The size of your cock will get you nowhere
I'll suffer in silence, I'll not make a sound
Maybe I'll take the high moral ground
Some enchanted evening, I'll sing you a song
Black rider, black rider, you've been on the job too long

what would make anyone think that's 'about' Keith?

Lets start with this line: "Black rider, black rider, hold it right there
The size of your cock will get you nowhere"...Not to mention the title..Just referencing what Marianne said in her book and what Keith said in his book..And I can throw a few other verses out..

I think it's more about Dylan himself or the never ending tour or one of the many facades and psyches that are Bob Dylan or the enigma of life and its myriad people places and things and what they all bring or anything we want to place upon or within it. Such is the nature of listening to, reading and deciphering the words of Mister Zimmerman and that what you read into his lyrics a moment ago is something new and different when you go back and read them again. More details emerge as you revisit the work again. Isn't this what art is about? I'm now wondering what Stones songs can be seen in this same context.

To me the whole song is just a feel of...Keith. To me anyway.I was just checking if anyone felt the same..With Dylan lately writing songs about, John Lennon, JFK, even mentioniong the Stones on one of his new songs, I thought he might be talking/singing about Keith.

If you listen carefully he actually sings "the size of your cockerel will get you nowhere."

Well, the lyrics could be about Keith, but also a number of people... Gregg Allman for instance.

Especially since he mentioned Dickey Betts in "Murder Most Foul'

Conspiracies abound!

Well, sometimes it draws some of the majesty and mystery from a lyric to know the personal frame of reference of the Artist. Or what one could assume about the circumstances of creation, however divine or mundane. Or both.

But in this case I can reliably report that one of the damn grandkids slipped a baby otter into the Malibu swimming pool when he was on tour.
Those Rock and roll children have way too much money and free time.
Well, when old Bob finally got home for a half an hour before one nighters in Aruba, Sydney, Santa Fe and an amphitheatre in Taiwan, well, that thing had gained 80 pounds and was hornier than your great grandma at an Elvis show in Vegas...
And did I say horny?
Those things are like mammal preying mantis that can swim faster, bite harder and are, by some reports, hung like an antelope, so....
...there ya go....

Do you really think Bob would write a song about Keith' cock especially based on what was written on Marianne book?
That's funny.

Highly doubt it's about Keith, and safe to say it's not about Mick either, otherwise the lyrics would say "you're tiny todger will get you nowhere"...

Ah, deciphering Dylan lyrics, which even he couldn't tell you what they're about. I remember those days, when people went through his garbage, desperate to know more. Each individual who hears, or reads a work, bring their own prism.
