Bob Dylan has said he thinks The Rolling Stones aren't “real” enough without original bassist Bill Wyman in the band. ... The bassist quit the band in 1990, after nearly three decades service. “I'm not saying they don't keep going, but they need Bill,” he said. “Without him they're a funk band.Apr 14, 2009

Bob Dylan in Vienna: play or pose?

The performance in the Konzerthaus ended with a small scandal: the master was angry with mobile phone filmmakers and broke off.

The most exciting moment in a good but not exciting concert came when it was almost over. Bob Dylan began the encore - and the people left their seats and streamed to the stage. And they started to FILM with their phones, which was strictly forbidden. Even before the concert the audience had been warned: "offenders would be "excluded from the event." (Missing the addition: "And sent home at the expense of the parents.")

Bob Dylan noticed this, broke off "Blowin 'In The Wind" after the first verse, got up, performed some sneeringly exaggerated dance steps and barked, "We can either play or pose, it's your decision!" Then he overlooked a monitor box in his anger, stumbled over it and almost fell on the drums. Then there were a few angry, groaning verses from "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry," and he was gone.

I wish he would finally realize that his voice is so bad now that he needs someone to sing with him to blend voices and actually sound good. I honestly don't even believe people who say they like his concerts now.

Thank you. I saw him last autumn and his vocals were better than I had heard in years.

Good reaction by Bob, but a pity for other fans, who actually can live through a concert without their @#$%& phones. Why not just enjoy the moment and forget the need to make a uninteressting documentary about their lifes?

Yeah right! Hopefully he'll just go back to the Wyman thread for a couple of years & talk politics.

As I posted a few months, I am glad I got see the legend. However, other than gracing us with his presence, the fans were ignored/hated by the performer. No interaction with the crowd, songs changed beyond recognition, etc.

Again, I am glad I got to see Dylan. He won't get me again.

Also, I appreciate the Stones giving a hell of an effort to entertain the fans when playing live.

I'm not sure anyone would reasonably disagree with this.

The Stones - who essentially tour behind HOT ROCKS - are consummate entertainers. Their box office prowess is undeniable and largely a function of their having evolved an unmatched genius for "giving the people what they want."

Dylan, OTOH, plays sets 50% of which are songs recorded from his last 4 albums of studio originals, is a thorny "artist," constantly wrestling with his own muse in an attempt to get "at" something deeper, something elemental, something buried in the swampy subconscious of this land of the free.

Good thing it wasn't Keith Jarrett; Bob was fairly mild when it came to mobile phones, but Mr Jarrett, apparently, really has a go at the audience over phones, coughing, shuffling etc.

I love both artists though, as they continue to make challenging music.
