I read in the news reports earlier this morning on this that it's Bob who's accompanying himself here.
Moi aussi, hopkins. That man contains universes. How fortunate we are to be trodding the planet while he's doin his work.
Bob's 1991 Grammy speech was "rational, straight, almost scholarly", too. But you will only be able to understand that if you are familiar with Bob's Jewish upbringing:
Dylan's 1991 Grammy comments were an allusion to Psalms 27:10: "When my father and mother abandon me, HaShem (G-d) will gather me up."
Dylan's remarks were almost a verbatim account of the commentary of Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsch (the spiritual leader of traditional Jewry in Germany in the mid 19th century) on that verse:
"Even if I were so depraved that my own mother and father would abandon me to my own devices, God would still gather me up and believe in my ability to mend my ways."
Now, we have no way of knowing if Dylan's father Abram Zimmerman really taught this to his son or if Bob simply picked it up from a commentary on the Jewish prayer book (Ps. 27 is recited at the morning and evening prayer services during the month before the Jewish New Year), but in any case, the wording is too similar to Hirsch's to ignore. Note how both Hirsch and Dylan reversed the "father and mother" of the original verse to "mother and father" and Dylan's use of the phrase "believe in your own ability to mend your own ways" directly parallels Hirsch's "believe in my ability to mend my ways".
It's unlikely Dylan's father was familiar with the writings of Rabbi Hirsch, the 19th Century leader of German neo-Orthodoxy. Dylan's involvement with Judaism has been mostly through Chabad, the Orthodox Jewish, Hasidic movement – also an unlikely place for him to have been introduced to the Hirsch commentary. It's more likely Dylan saw the quote in the Metsudah Siddur, a prayerbook popular among Baalei Tshuvah (as "returnees" to orthodox Judaism are known, although many of them are encountering serious Judaism for the first time). The lines from Hirsch are cited in the Metsudah commentary and represent its translation from Hirsch's German. And we can speculate that it's their language that Dylan echoes.
By attributing the words to his father, Dylan is following a long tradition of attribution in Judaism. He can be said to be using "father(s)" in a wider sense, meaning his heritage.
What was especially poignant about Dylan referencing all of that was the fact that Dylan's mother was in the audience at the 1991 Grammy Awards.
Dylan's words sometimes may seem simple, but there is always a lot going on between and behind the lines.

I feel almost the same way when I go back to my original hometown of Santa Monica which I left in 1989. It's really bittersweet as everything has completely changed. Overcrowded, overpriced, and nearly unrecognizable. The old Henry's liquor store/market down the street from me has turned into some kind of ritzy boutique. The old Fireside market has turned into a Starbucks and some other crap. The old Sweet Sixteen diner, has turned into a sushi bar I think. Alot of Hollywood type snobby rich people have taken over everything. I still have friends and some relatives down there, and they're suffocating and suffering through all the changes. I now live only an hour or so up the coast, but it seems thousands of miles away. I'm still close enough to L.A. to go to concerts, etc., but thankfully I'm now "over the hills and far away".

A message to reflectabout.It brings back a lot of memories of Remarque's "All Quiet on the West", I did not think of that book for a while. Now I am thinkinking of Remarque's fate - and I think of his sister, who was assassined by the nationalsocialists.

Bob's exposure to Buddy of course, pre-dates The Stones appearance on the scene; he saw Buddy just shortly before his death at age 22.

Anyone have any idea whose piano accompaniment is undergirding Dylan's speech? As well as an backstory of how that came about -- Dylan's idea? someone else's notion?
This may be sacrilege but I wish I could hear this without the piano meander. I was happy to read the whole thing first, but even so, upon listening found it harder to follow than if it were simply the music of his voice.
What think - or know - about dis?

It got me smiling at near the very end when he says the songs shouldn't be read on the page but rather meant to be sung; almost turning the Award on it's head in a gentle way, even as he finally crosses the finish line for them with the delivered speech...
....accepting so gracefully and with reamarkable prose and spoken delivery; it's all sorta music to me when it comes from him; and lit too i guess in it's way because i DO read lyrics and enjoy them.
I particularly liked lyric sheets in the albums I bought, understanding intuitively even as a child that the meter and feel and projection of a song had all these other dynamics you could bend, wrap or rush words around...and that reading great lit, or even favorite stories to your kids from endless books you bought for them, had dynamic and tonal expression you'd naturally dramatize to make the kids laugh or listen or be intrigued...or get them involvd in the story a bit and maybe distracated from their cares or troubles, growing pains...
...but one more time he got a little wry smile out of me at the end of this cool speech...saying what a lot of fans have said and acknowledged here...that the muse is singing through him and that songs are meant to be sung.
Two opposing thoughts hold true at once for me w him, cause i have since forever really enjoyed reading his lyrics on the page, and have bought big hard cover books of these lyric compilations going back decades as they came out.
Dylan is an evergreen; the gift that keeps on giving; a precious resource.
I feel safer in the world while he's in it. Masked and Anonymous whatever; he's the real deal man that puts it right out there with perspective, irony, grace and intelligence...he is ancient yet ahead of the curve and in touch with eternal truths Plato & Socrates worked out and wonders how we still could be so stupid and blind and unaware of the illusion...Plato's 'the cave' deals with perception and illusion and social engineering & Bob seems a bit the reader haha...
...yet his connection to Buddy Holly, Little Richard, even soulful pop boy crooner Bobby Vee inspired him to High School performance debut banging on a piano shouting Little Richard songs in the 50's when Minnesota school kids maybe hearing that blessed racket for the first time and not even knowing how to handle it other than maybe laughing and leaving...
...then that Leadbelly story kills me...how he listened a hundred times and got inside of it and how it got inside of him...
i just love so much about that guy. He is the most precious human in so many ways. He would laugh derisively and make fun of me or anyone who tried to nail w him this descrition but I find a moral authority and dignity in a lot of what he's about and I'm actually pretty grateful for him in this world.

yeah he has four hands – you can hear him handling the sheets of paper he's reading from. Thus he can't play the piano at the same time – either his words or his piano playing must have been pre-recorded

wow that is fascinating and very informed post. I'd always wondered about that grammy line. I sort of assumed it was a statement of great mercy and maybe had bilical force or origins but really knew nothing of these various origns and such....i do remember he appeared at a Chabad teleton years ago, and also at the wailing wall; but also had deep passionate relationship with Jesus who i guess history tells us is also directly from the a sect of Jews with 'traditional' Abrahamic values and directions, ala Ten Commandments and more....and also had no idea what was written relating to this, by whom and when; so thanks much; it widens my perspective on that, and him. Such a deep and precious cat.

Dylan's speech for the Nobel folks is probably the coolest "recording" he's done in years. It doesn't clear up anything regarding who Bob Dylan really is, but, what a listen. Surrealistic and totally, IMHO, in line with the whatever you wanna make of it story telling in the movie "I'm Not There".
