Best Dylan live album in my opinion.

Liked it at the time, but thought it didn't capture the show I saw.

Saw the first concert of the tour at the Chicago Stadium. The Band was great. Some of the moments at the show were electric. Just thinking back to It's Alright Ma gives me goosebumps.

If I remember correctly, there were stories the tour didn't go that well for the performers.

I bought this album the evening after I saw the last waltz. I love it

there are a fair number of soundboard tapes from that tour that circulate

did you buy the last waltz album? it's even better.

Love this album. Had it from day one.

My particular favorites are Levon's great version of "The Night They Drove ol Dixie Down" and Bob's passionate version of "Knocking on Heaven's Door."

Bob Dylan to Release ‘The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12?
By Nick DeRiso September 23, 2015 12:49 PM

Dylan

The next installment of the Bob Dylan‘s heralded Bootleg Series will focus on the development of his electric sound in two crucial years during the ’60s.

The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, due on Nov. 6, includes early demos, alternative versions and outtakes from a period that saw Dylan release Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde. Those sessions produced signature tracks including “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Subterranean Homesick Blues” and “Visions of Johanna.”

“At the beginning, most songs were fairly shapeless,” Dylan sideman Al Kooper says in the new issue of Rolling Stone, which will be available Friday. “Only little by little did they come together.”

Expected highlights include Bob Dylan’s early attempt at a plugged-in version of “Mr. Tambourine Man,” months prior to the Byrds crafted a breakout hit with it. A take on “Visions of Johanna” includes alternate lyrics. And the whirlwind sessions for “Like a Rolling Stone” are comprehensively explored.

There are also early Blonde on Blonde tracks featuring future members of the Band, recorded before Dylan changed direction and decided to use a group of Nashville musicians. Those sessions differed greatly from the more loosely organized Highway 61 Revisited, said Kooper, who unexpectedly found himself sitting in on organ for “Like a Rolling Stone.”

The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 will be available in three different editions: an economical two-disc size, an expanded six-disc version and a massive 18-disc package, which includes, among other things, sessions for “Like a Rolling Stone.”

I think this was briefly discussed awhile back, but an 18 disc package...WTF!!!!!
Can't find any other info regarding prices, etc, but that 18 pack might cost an arm and a leg.eye popping smiley

On one hand, thats kind of the holy grail in terms of getting what was maybe his most pivotal moment in his career, and possibly even music in general.

On the other hand, I have a life that when the hell am I gonna listen to 18 discs?!!! (at least more than once lol).

Then again, it just reminds me of the 80 CD Grateful Dead 1972 Europe tour they just released. And hey, people bought it so I guess its better to be out there in some fashion than never released because its "unmarketable".

Here's a tracklist for the 6-CD deluxe edition: [www.sainsburysentertainment.co.uk]

And here's a Amazon link with the price of 310 euros eye popping smiley for the 6-CD Edition: [www.amazon.de]

EDIT: Amazon.fr has listed the 6-CD edition with the price of 43,99 euros. On this link you can listen to some snippets of It Takes a Lot to Laugh, it Takes a Train to Cry and Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.

WTF? You've got to be kidding me, they released an 80 CD package? Do you have to buy all 80 CD's at a time? I thought the best of those shows was already culled for the original Europe 72 release. Wow.

I'll admit, I did crack up when I saw one disc is JUST Like A Rolling Stone. Again, a mix of "cool" and "are you f'in crazy?!!"

And yeah, that Grateful Dead thing did happen, and I believe it was an 80 CD box set. No single shows, but maybe I'm wrong.

For the first link, that equals about $346...must be a mistake?! For 6 cd's?!!
Well at least they comes with a book. winking smiley

The other link is more reasonable at only $49...but that seems low so might also be a mistake?
If it is correct, does it come with the book? haha

God only knows how much the 18 cd edition will cost....confused smiley ...maybe the first link at 310 euros ($346) would be the correct price for that?

Still no listing for anything on Amazon (U.S.)

The first link at 310 euros it's the Blu-spec version, and the second one (43 euros) it's the MP3 version. I can't remember where I read but it seems there will be an official announcement tomorrow about this release, so I think we can have some more details about the prices and (hopefully) the tracklist for the 18-CD version.

I don't speak either of those languages, so was just looking at the prices!

Hopefully more info. tomorrow as you say - lots to consider here.

Well that's actually pretty cool. I couldn't imagine 80 CD's from the Europe 72 concerts, although that was arguably their best period, I think the idea of a show every year would be cool to be able to see their changes from year to year. Amazing to think they never took a year off in those 30 years. Thanks for the info.

its already sold out too. it was like $750 I think. good news is there is a 4 cd set in stores that contains 1 song from each one of those concerts so you get 30 songs each from a different year

Its the last thing I'll say on it cause it is a Dylan thread, but yes, there was a full Europe 72 tour box set that was 73 CDs:
[en.wikipedia.org]

And the most recent box set for their 50th which was 80 CDs and included a show a year for 30 years:
[en.wikipedia.org]

All of which DID sell to at least someone. So I guess my point being it puts the 18 discs into perspective, if its actually released to the public.

And it's MUCH more expensive.

Wow that's a beauty, but at $599 will have to pass. Not a bad deal for the rich and famous I suppose, but I am neither. drinking smiley
And a leopard skin printed spindle I can probably live without.

The 18 CDs without all the extra gimmicks would have been my preference.

I agree.
The two cd edition is now listed on Amazon (U.S.) at a reasonable $19.98.
Still no sign of 6 cd edition which is what I'll probably opt for - and hopefully for under $60.

Unfortunately, it will cost more than $60: [www.amazon.com]

Geez $149.98...eye popping smiley

"Packaged in a slipcase with a separate 120-page hardcover book with exclusive photography and liner notes".

So If I do go this route, I'll be paying apprx. $90 above what I thought it should be just for a hardcover book.....confused smiley

On the positive side, don't think I can live without 20 different versions of Like a Rolling Stone.lol
Seriously though, this is gonna be the one I want, which probably means less Christmas gifts for family and friends. winking smiley
